There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Description: The reminiscences mainly concentrate on the period 1842 to 1878 and were dictated to members of his family during the latter part of 1908 and beginning of 1909. They give details of White's mothers family and his father's career as a midshipman. They then go on to describe White's career in New Zealand first as a surveyor in the Horokiwi and Wellington areas, a farmer at Mohunoa (Kapiti) and Wainuiomata, in the volunteer forces which fought against Te Rangiatea, his visits to Auckland and then his later career in Mongonui [Mangonui] holding various government posts including work for the Land Commissioner. The reminiscences give White's impressions of relations between Maori and settler especially in the greater Wellington/Kapiti and Maunganui districts and recount many incidents involving such people as Te Rauparaha, Governor Grey, Fitzroy, McLean, Hadfield and many others. Description: Stevenson wrote her account in 1987 and begins by describing her family and their situation from when she was born in Pahiatua in 1920 until the 1950s when her marriage ended. She describes the daily life and routines of the family, the various moves they made - to Wellsford, Hamilton, back to Pahiatua, Ongarue, Makokomiko and Wellington - the work her father did which included selling books for the Seventh-Day Adventists and being a farm manager - and of life at the various schools she and her sisters attended. She describes working in Wellington at the Sanitarium Health Food vegetarian cafe, her marriage to Bob Woods, various events in their family life and their subsequent separation when she began working at the Odeon picture theatre in Auckland. She also discusses the role of religion in a person's upbringing. Stevenson and her husband narrowly missed being on the Tangiwai train and she elaborates on this. Description: The reminiscences cover the period 1839 to 1914 and most are based on Taine's own experience although they contain also an outline of the early history of the colony from other sources. He came to New Zealand aged 22 on the `Adelaide' and lived in Wellington till 1862 when he moved to Dunedin. After 1879 Taine lived in Auckland. At the end of volume 3 there is a section on early Wellington street names. Also (volume 3 p 515) there is a note on the history of Waiwera which Taine frequently visited.
