Description: Accounts of life in Wellington, Manawatu, Gisborne and Taranaki, and many political recollections and comments. There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Source of title - Transcribed He was a store-keeper, law clerk and land agent; member of Parliament for Hawera for six years; mayor of Hawera for thirteen years and member of other local bodies in Taranaki. He was a noted runner; played Rugby football for these provinces; and as owner and spectator was keenly interested in horse-riding. He was one of the founders of a number of clubs and societies, including the Philatelic Society and the Polynesian Society. Description: Comprises holograph diary kept by P Davy on the `Ruahine' and during his tour of New Zealand. After disembarking at Wellington where he visited relatives he toured to other parts of New Zealand. He describes a gathering of Maori following the settlement of fishing rights on Lake Wairarapa, a visit to a freezing works at Belfast, gold mining on the West Coast and Rotorua where he visited a pa, saw geysers and bathed in the hot pools. His journal ends on the return journey to England when staying at Sydney. Also includes transcript of part of the diary (16 Nov 1895-3 Jan 1896). After travelling around New Zealand they left Auckland for Sydney, 18 Mar. The writer of the diary is presumed to be P Davy, a passenger on the `Ruahine'; he visited members of the Davy family while in Wellington. He was probably one of the Devonshire Davys, a nephew of George Boutflower Davy, an official of the Land Registration Court of NZ, and the son of Edward Davy (1806-1885), an experimental chemist who emigrated to Australia. Description: The journal contains an account of McNab's journey with observations on the places he visited. Includes mention of McNab completing the census aboard the SS `Taiaroa' on the night of 28 Mar 1886. He travelled by train to Christchurch, by steamer to Wellington and from there by another steamer to Napier. From here he travelled to Taupo via Tauranga by coach and toured the adjacent thermal areas and visited the Pink and White Terraces. Back in Tauranga McNab proceeded by steamer to Auckland from where he took another steamer to New Plymouth. From there he travelled by train to Wanganui and then on to Palmerston North from where he proceeded by coach to Masterton. Herries made almost daily entries and during his working week he noted when he was in chambers, who he dealt with, and especially recorded social occasions He left for NZ on 20 July 1893, reaching Hobart 1 Sep and NZ 6 Sep, and returned to England on 20 Jan 1894 on the `Mararoa' to Sydney and the `Ville de la Ciotat' to Marseilles, arriving there 2 Mar and returning overland to England. Description: Bennett desribes his experiences travelling and surveying in Ireland (1838-1840); his voyage on the `Lady Clarke' to Sydney and his brief stay there (1841) and the voyage to NZ in 1842. He gives his impressions of Kororareka and Russell (Okiato) including a lengthy discussion of Hone Heke's actions in Kororareka and writes further of his residence in Auckland and Wellington. Volume also has an appendix (50 page Maori word list) Bennett was with the Royal Engineers. In 1844 he was in Kerikeri but after being ill for some months, died in 1845. Description: Corliss has not kept a daily diary but rather an occasional journal describing special occasions such as a family holiday to Picton, a train trip from Petone to Wellington, aspects of her teaching career, lists of stories she had written, her musical interests, and a voyage to England on the `Ayrshire' in 1914, where she studied music. Included with the volume is a copy of a letter from George H Valentine to his brother (from Lefevers Peninsula, Port Adelaide, 7 Sep 1859), and notes re the `Annie Wilson' which arrived at Wellington 22 March 1854.
