Description: Comprises holograph diary kept by P Davy on the `Ruahine' and during his tour of New Zealand. After disembarking at Wellington where he visited relatives he toured to other parts of New Zealand. He describes a gathering of Maori following the settlement of fishing rights on Lake Wairarapa, a visit to a freezing works at Belfast, gold mining on the West Coast and Rotorua where he visited a pa, saw geysers and bathed in the hot pools. His journal ends on the return journey to England when staying at Sydney. Also includes transcript of part of the diary (16 Nov 1895-3 Jan 1896). Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - Full transcript of diary at MS-Papers-4391 Davy and his Aunt Harriet boarded the `Ruahine' at Plymouth 16 Nov 1895 and disembarked 12 Jan 1896 at Wellington where they stayed with relatives. After travelling around New Zealand they left Auckland for Sydney, 18 Mar. The writer of the diary is presumed to be P Davy, a passenger on the `Ruahine'; he visited members of the Davy family while in Wellington. He was probably one of the Devonshire Davys, a nephew of George Boutflower Davy, an official of the Land Registration Court of NZ, and the son of Edward Davy (1806-1885), an experimental chemist who emigrated to Australia. Source of title - Supplied title Relationship complexity - Typescript at MS-1831 Conway Rose was an emigrant who arrived in Canterbury on the "Midlothian", with his wife Louisa George Rose, on 8 Oct 1851, under the auspices of the Canterbury Association. The Roses settled in Christchurch intending to stay in the settlement for ten years but left after only three. His sister "Issy" remained in England. Description: Comprises diary or report of a surveying expedition 27 Oct-21 Dec (nd) which left Nelson for the Marlborough Sounds via the Boulder Bank, Croiselles, Anakiwa, the Rai and Whangamoa in which Paske (presumably the writer) mentions meeting settlers and local Maori, food collected and eaten (including fuschia berries), records the death of Simon (a Maori) and the Maori reaction to it and other details. Letters from Lucy Jervois, possibly Paske's aunt, to her sister and brother re Paske's death (12 Jun 1886), and to her sister-in-law Amelia re same (19 Jun 1886); letter from Mr Jervois probably to Paske (snr). Includes court record re Paske being intestate. Also contains `Report on the surveys of New Zealand 1885-1886', by James McKerrow, referring to the death of Paske on a surveying expedition. Diary of Albert Edward Weir

Description: The diary covers the period 5 Jan - 17 Jan 1895 and gives an account of a trip made by Albert Edward Weir from Heathcote Valley to Greymouth and back. He was accompanied by his brother Tom on this journey and also makes mention of the driver William Gemmell. The account describes the scenery and the travelling conditions. An abbreviated version of the diary appeared in `The Canterbury Times' on 2 June 1892 and clippings of this are pasted in the back of the diary. Other miscellaneous clippings are also pasted into the diary. Albert Edward Weir was born at Heathcote Valley, near Christchurch on 27 Jan 1872. He was employed by Black, Beattie and Co and the electoral rolls of 1893 and 1896 listing him as `drapers assistant'. He died of TB on 20 Jan 1898, a week before his 26th birthday. Tom Weir, Albert's brother, became a mining engineer who spent most of his career abroad and died in England in 1945 aged ca 79. William Gemmell, the `guide and driver' noted in the diary died in 1943, aged 94. Quantity: 1 folder(s) (1 piece).
