Description: Includes a preface and translation in S P Smith's hand with a note: `A large part of this has been embodied in "Hist. and Trad. of Taranaki Coast"'. There is also a covering note signed by W H S (W H Skinner) on the provenance of the ms with a genealogy of Teira Whatakore attached. Also includes letter from T M Hocken to Smith, Dunedin 1 Jun 1893, forwarding books and precis of copies or extracts of Colonial Office material, Sep 1835, on the `Alligator' and J Guard affair. The manuscript gives a biographical account of Wiremu Kingi Matakatea, with whakapapa, with much information about his role in conflicts between Taranaki and other iwi, and between Taranaki and the Government in the first Taranaki campaign (1860) in the New Zealand wars; the document also discusses the shipwreck `Harriet' and the treatment received by the survivors; there are also translations of the material. Description: Travel journal kept by a Mr Pontifex, apparently a lawyer in Brisbane. Records his travels to the Australian outback, New Zealand, Europe and Britain. Describes travel from Brisbane to St George Qld (1886); Christchurch to Blenheim (Oct-Nov 1889), involving a tour of sheep stations on horseback with a friend, recording names of stations and owners, notes on scenery and state of roads; Christchurch to Hanmer via Kaikoura (Dec 1889) on foot or by coach, with similar descriptions; North Island Jan-Feb 1890, with visits to Maori villages, including Parihaka, where he met Te Whiti. Described in some detail. Other passages record trips to Europe. At the end of the book is a resume of his extensive travels. Kingitanga papers

Description: Contains papers about the Kingitanga and the Tariao cult, explaining the origin, theology and activities of the cult, and the place of King Tawhiao in the belief system; also contains correspondence to and from the Kingitanga in the 1880s with regard to Maori political representation, Maori sovereignty, land issues, pardons for Te Kooti Arikirangi and others and the relationship between the Kingitanga and the Government. Also contains minutes from the proceedings of a court case before one of Tawhiao's courts, brought by Tiahuia Reone against Mamae Te Hapi regarding a stolen horse; translation (into Maori) of press reports in the New Zealand Herald and the Weekly News about the 'coming in ' of Tawhiao, and the negotiations that surrounded this; there is also a timeline showing when iwi affiliated to the Kingitanga. There is a copy of a letter from Tawhiao to the Privy Council, petitioning for an investigation into Maori land rights, Maori sovreignty and Maori political representation; the letter is accompanied by a lengthy preamble that sets out the basis for the grievances.
