Includes recipes for ratafia biscuits, royal pudding, French honey, scrambled eggs, lemon sponge, lemonade, tapioca cream, arrowroot pudding, peach jelly, raspberry vinegar, Turkish delight, dainty cakes, hop beer, tomato sauce, fig jams, hunter's beef broth, chutney and pie melon jam. Also recipes for traditional medicines including cough mixture and gargle for sore throats. Instructions for making saddle polish and a newspaper cutting of handy household hints. The remainder of the journal includes notes on the height and weight of family members, address lists and an epitaph from the Bible "Here lies an old woman who always was tired..." Description: Contains notes about places associated with Kupe in Wellington and Wairarapa, whakapapa, financial records by Tuta Nihoniho and miscellaneous notes about land management There is a lengthy account of the destruction of the Te Arawa canoe by Raumati, and subsequent events, and a related narrative about Raumati's son, Ngarue and his activites and family There are haka and waiata, a list of pa in Taranaki and related iwi, notes about the origins and settlements of various iwi, notes about greenstone, and a narrative about conflicts between Te Ati Awa and Waikato, and the subsequent migration of Te Ati Awa along with Ngati Raukawa and Ngati Toa to the Wellington area There are notes about the arrival of Pakeha in New Zealand before Captain Cook, and a note in Elsdon Best's hand that states that much of the information in the manuscript was extracted from the Journal of the Polynesian Society and other published sources Also contains the names of several muskets belonging to the Ngati Toa which were named in a waiata composed by the wife of Te Pukoro, a Ngati Tama/ Ati Awa chief killed in the Wairarapa in the late 1820s. Description: Comprises holograph diary kept by P Davy on the `Ruahine' and during his tour of New Zealand. After disembarking at Wellington where he visited relatives he toured to other parts of New Zealand. He describes a gathering of Maori following the settlement of fishing rights on Lake Wairarapa, a visit to a freezing works at Belfast, gold mining on the West Coast and Rotorua where he visited a pa, saw geysers and bathed in the hot pools. His journal ends on the return journey to England when staying at Sydney. Also includes transcript of part of the diary (16 Nov 1895-3 Jan 1896). Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - Full transcript of diary at MS-Papers-4391 Davy and his Aunt Harriet boarded the `Ruahine' at Plymouth 16 Nov 1895 and disembarked 12 Jan 1896 at Wellington where they stayed with relatives. After travelling around New Zealand they left Auckland for Sydney, 18 Mar. The writer of the diary is presumed to be P Davy, a passenger on the `Ruahine'; he visited members of the Davy family while in Wellington. He was probably one of the Devonshire Davys, a nephew of George Boutflower Davy, an official of the Land Registration Court of NZ, and the son of Edward Davy (1806-1885), an experimental chemist who emigrated to Australia. Description: Includes a preface and translation in S P Smith's hand with a note: `A large part of this has been embodied in "Hist. and Trad. of Taranaki Coast"'. There is also a covering note signed by W H S (W H Skinner) on the provenance of the ms with a genealogy of Teira Whatakore attached. Also includes letter from T M Hocken to Smith, Dunedin 1 Jun 1893, forwarding books and precis of copies or extracts of Colonial Office material, Sep 1835, on the `Alligator' and J Guard affair. The manuscript gives a biographical account of Wiremu Kingi Matakatea, with whakapapa, with much information about his role in conflicts between Taranaki and other iwi, and between Taranaki and the Government in the first Taranaki campaign (1860) in the New Zealand wars; the document also discusses the shipwreck `Harriet' and the treatment received by the survivors; there are also translations of the material.
