Description: Comprises correspondence between Thomas King and Mary Chilman (later King), and between King and various family members and friends; King's business correspondence, especially relating to coastal shipping; papers relating to King's election to the House of Representatives (1853-1855, 1860) and to the Taranaki Provincial Council (1856, 1857-1861); a few relating to his career as manager of the Bank of New Zealand in New Plymouth (1861-1876); and a considerable amount relating to his position as chairman of the New Plymouth Harbour Board (1876-ca1889). Other papers include correspondence from Mary King to her husband, clippings and correspondence relating to Truby and Newton King, sons of Thomas and Mary King, various papers relating to Taranaki incidents including petitions, list of electors (1852) and other papers. Description: Accounts of life in Wellington, Manawatu, Gisborne and Taranaki, and many political recollections and comments. There is a chapter on old-time racing, including the days before the book-maker was banned. There are also references to visiting celebrities, among them Mark Twain, Frank Bullen and Paderewski, and memories of many theatrical shows. Included is a summary of the career of the late Henry Hayward, a pioneer in cinema entertainment in NZ. Source of title - Transcribed He was a store-keeper, law clerk and land agent; member of Parliament for Hawera for six years; mayor of Hawera for thirteen years and member of other local bodies in Taranaki. He was a noted runner; played Rugby football for these provinces; and as owner and spectator was keenly interested in horse-riding. He was one of the founders of a number of clubs and societies, including the Philatelic Society and the Polynesian Society. There are some letters of political, social and community significance relating to the careers of William Rolleston, and his son F J Rolleston. Writers include Professor J B Condliffe, Sir Francis Bell, Sir James Parr. Added in 1980 to this accession were 11 letters 1891-1893 from J D Ormond, Harold Kemp, E J Watts etc; 15 letters of family to F Rolleston at school, 1881-1889; various records of F Rolleston's life at school; his `Parodies on Gilbert and Sullivan' etc. Later in same year further Rolleston letters, 1868-1949 were added, including letters relating to the political career of John Christopher Rolleston.
