Description: Volume contains handwritten recipes compiled by Mrs Beard and written down in her journal. Includes recipes for ratafia biscuits, royal pudding, French honey, scrambled eggs, lemon sponge, lemonade, tapioca cream, arrowroot pudding, peach jelly, raspberry vinegar, Turkish delight, dainty cakes, hop beer, tomato sauce, fig jams, hunter's beef broth, chutney and pie melon jam. Also recipes for traditional medicines including cough mixture and gargle for sore throats. Instructions for making saddle polish and a newspaper cutting of handy household hints. The remainder of the journal includes notes on the height and weight of family members, address lists and an epitaph from the Bible "Here lies an old woman who always was tired..." Description: Estate papers of W F Hansen and his father Anders. These include correspondence, diaries, autograph books, insurance papers, accounts, property papers, papers re British & Continental Film Company Ltd, 1920s. The diaries of Elizabeth Hansen, 1928-1932, 1954-1959, 1962, 1964, contain brief daily entries describing her domestic activities, weather conditions, involvement in community work and the Methodist Church. The early diaries were kept while the Hansens were in Featherston (the period immediately following their marriage). From 1954, after Fred Hansen died, Elizabeth lived at Masterton. Included in some of the diaries are newspaper clippings which report on church and community affairs. Contains letters by Anne Hansen aboard the `Rangitata', in England and Ireland to Fred and Lizzie Hansen in Masterton, New Zealand. Anne describes her daily life and travel and discusses family matters. Also contains a letter from Lena Cook (nee Hansen) while on holiday in Melbourne and a letter from an ex-soldier Elyabill Harrold to Fred Hansen following Fred's return from World War One. See ATL-Group-00334 for photographic material relating to the Hansen family. William Frederick Hansen's father, Anders Hansen was a lighthouse keeper. Fred Hansen was born at Cape Saunders, Westport. He was a tunneller in World War One. Elizabeth and Fred Hansen lived at Featherston and later moved to Masterton where Fred died in 1953. Description: The journal contains an account of McNab's journey with observations on the places he visited. Includes mention of McNab completing the census aboard the SS `Taiaroa' on the night of 28 Mar 1886. Variations in title - Spine title `Travels in New Zealand' Relationship complexity - Also transcript styled as "Travels in New Zealand" (MS-Papers-6235-3) and microfilm (Micro-MS-0930) In Feb 1886 McNab left his home in Timaru for a tour of the North Island. He travelled by train to Christchurch, by steamer to Wellington and from there by another steamer to Napier. From here he travelled to Taupo via Tauranga by coach and toured the adjacent thermal areas and visited the Pink and White Terraces. Back in Tauranga McNab proceeded by steamer to Auckland from where he took another steamer to New Plymouth. From there he travelled by train to Wanganui and then on to Palmerston North from where he proceeded by coach to Masterton. Arriving in Wellington by train McNab sailed by steamer to Lyttelton and returned home to Timaru by train. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: Consists of 7 letters, transcripts of these letters and a genealogical table of the Reese/Dalziel family showing the relationships of people mentioned in the letters. Five of the letters are written by Anne Dawson (Reese). Letters dated June 1866, May 1884, July 1884 and Dec 1888 are to her parents and one dated Jan 1888 to her sister Marion (?). The letter by Anne Dawson dated July 1884 includes a note from her husband Joseph Dawson. Of the other two letters one is written by Maggie Dalziel Reese to her aunt Anne Dawson, dated Jan 1885. The final letter in this collection was probably written by Marion Reese to her niece Josephine Dalziel Daniel (Dawson). The date and authorship of this letter is based on internal evidence as there is only a fragment of the letter. All the letters are primarily about family affairs and happenings in the local district. Joseph Dawson's note is concerned with the electioneering in which he was involved on behalf of Mr McCardle. Anne's brother Daniel Reese was subsequently elected to a Christchurch seat. Accompanying material - Accompanied by a list and background information concerning the collection. Source of title - supplied title The Reese family came to Canterbury individually and in groups from 1862 to 1867. The eldest son, Daniel, arrived first. He was followed in 1864 by the two eldest of his sisters, Jean Russell and Anne. In 1866 the parents, Thomas and Jean Reese arrived with their two remaining daughters, Marion and Mary. Alexander, the other son, arrived in 1867. Daniel developed a building business in Christchurch and remained there. He served in the House of Representatives 1884-1887. The remaining children all moved to the North Island, particularly to the Wairarapa and Rangitikei. Quantity: 1 folder(s).
