Description: Typescript draft of a guide to New Zealand placenames and meanings. Each entry includes the postal district and location for the place, suburb or town mentioned. Also included is a descriptive meaning for each location. Some entries have been annotated at a later point in ink. Throughout the volume are examples of postmarks from New Zealand post offices. Many of the placenames cited are historic in origin, for example: Zalatown, which is a ghost town near Lyell. The inside cover depicts sketches of New Zealand Post Office buildings, old and new. The Maori letters include information about the meanings of various Maori words, intelligence about the Waikato and Taranaki campaigns in the New Zealand Wars and the establishment of the Kingitanga, ethnographic information, and a call for a review of Maori educational spending The printed Maori material includes a proclamation from the Governor calling for the end to intertribal hostilities, and an open letter from Wi Tako decrying Maori resistance to the Government in Taranaki and calling for peace. Description: Minutebook contains ms minutes and printed annual reports for years 1886-1892 and 1899-1901. At back of volume is list of New Zealand and foreign distributing agents. Also included are two letters addressed to the Secretary, one re purchase of a tract dated 5 April 1893 and the other re donation to the Institution dated 13 Dec 1900 Source of title - Supplied title Institution was set up in 1885 to organise the translation, printing and distribution of Gospel tracts to the Maori in New Zealand. It was based in Gisborne, and was funded by voluntary subscriptions. Joseph Baker acted as Secretary and translator and also supervised the publishing and circulation of tracts. Yearly meetings were held and an annual report presented from 1885-1901 except for the years 1893-1896 when the Institution's activities lapsed due to lack of funds. There are also notes dictated by Tamarau Waiari of Ruatoki, dealing with Tuhoe history, whakapapa and land tenure (possibly associated with the Urewera Commission), notes about various Maori vocabulary items, notes about customary concepts and practices, waiata and karakia (from Tuhoe?), there are also notes in shorthand that are headed `Te Amiowhenua' and may discuss that military excursion by Ngapuhi and their allies.
