Description: Includes a preface and translation in S P Smith's hand with a note: `A large part of this has been embodied in "Hist. and Trad. of Taranaki Coast"'. There is also a covering note signed by W H S (W H Skinner) on the provenance of the ms with a genealogy of Teira Whatakore attached. Also includes letter from T M Hocken to Smith, Dunedin 1 Jun 1893, forwarding books and precis of copies or extracts of Colonial Office material, Sep 1835, on the `Alligator' and J Guard affair. The manuscript gives a biographical account of Wiremu Kingi Matakatea, with whakapapa, with much information about his role in conflicts between Taranaki and other iwi, and between Taranaki and the Government in the first Taranaki campaign (1860) in the New Zealand wars; the document also discusses the shipwreck `Harriet' and the treatment received by the survivors; there are also translations of the material. Description: The papers collected by Dorothy Strauch are in two parts. The first relates to the mission of Christoph Dierks at Waitotara and includes copies of letters he and other Lutheran missionaries wrote back to Missionsanstalt Hermannsburg in Germany. This correspondence is in German. The second part of the collection comprises printed material, mainly serials, gathered by Dorothy Strauch in her capacity as archivist for St Martin's Lutheran Church, Marton. Missionsanstalt Hermannsburg dispached Christoph Dierks, Hartwig Dierks, Heinrich Loose and Wilhelm Kowert to New Zealand to serve as missionaries. Description: Transcription by Nicki and Robert Harding from notes made by Rechab Harding of a journey he and his family took in 1891. He describes their departure from Waipukurau, going through the Manawatu Gorge, reaching Palmerston North, Otaki and going through Rangihaeata's and Te Rauparaha's territory, Wellington, Paekakariki, Wanganui, Nukumaru, Waitotara, New Plymouth, he gives his views on the Taranaki wars, taking a steamer to Auckland and travelling to the Waikato River where he also discusses the New Zealand wars, then going to Okoroire for bathing and where they spent eight days, then moving on to Kaipara where they sailed on the harbour. Heine family : Anna Dierks' diary, and Pastor Heine's recollections

Description: Anna Dierk's diary is a detailed account of her life as an elder daughter in a household of fourteen children and as a missionary's wife. Written in German Gothic text the diary was translated into English by her son, Theo Dierks. Joachim Mattner compared this English translation with the original German text and noted alterations which he felt were accurate translations of the original. The text which appears here is a typescript copy of Theo Dierk's English translation with Mattner's annotation inserted into the text in square brackets. It is accompanied by a note by the donor explaining the background to, and providing a summary of, Mattner's annotations. Pastor Heine's recollections were written in 1884 at the request of his family and contain an account of his ancestory and childhood. The narrative ceases in 1828 while he was still a boy in living in Germany. The typescript contains minor corrections by Mattner inserted in the text and indicated by square brackets.
