Description: The author of this diary and common place book is unknown. The diary entries start on Monday 1st Jan 1894 and finish on Saturday 16 Feb 1895. The entries describe the weather, comings and goings of various relations and neighbours and record the comings and goings of ships in and out of the port at Patea. Names of the ships, their times of arrival and departure and their ports of origin and destinations are recorded. Description: The letters in this collection are written by John Gibson to his brother Charles Edmund Gibson. One, dated 5th Nov 1868, describes precautions and preparations in operation because of the war. The other, dated 18th December 1868, gives an account of the fight with Hauhau that occurred on the 15th December. It also includes a sketch map of the village of Taumaha where part of the fighting took place. Also included is a stock list for Gibson's store dated 1 Oct 1888. Source of title - supplied title Accompanying material - Accompanied by a letter from the donor giving some provenance details and explaining some of the content of the material. John Gibson lived in Patea where he established and ran a general store. He was part of the Wanganui Volunteer Cavalry which under Captain Finnimore fought with the Hauhau at Manutahi and Taumaha on the 15th Dec 1868. Quantity: 1 folder(s) (9 leaves). Description: The log book begins on 1 Jan 1891 and finishes on 15 May 1894; Hurley tended to note important events rather than record daily entries. It is a record of both his private life and his working life as a Bank of New South Wales inspector. Also included are two sections at the back of the log, Funny sayings of children, 1896, and Dates: Great events in history (1888-1895). Hurley's area as an inspector included the South Island (he lived in Nelson with his family) and the lower half of the North Island, from Taranaki to Hawke's Bay. He was deaf and describes situations relating to this. Description: Folder comprises five literary drafts for chapters relating to the colonial forces and encounters with Maori during the New Zealand Wars. Manuscripts possibily written around 1907 as Ward reflects on his career as a soldier. Chapter entitled `My heart's desire - A soldier at last' details Ward's enlistment at Wanganui in Major Von Tempsky's Forest Ranger Company No2. Includes details of his military accoutrements and descriptions of his fellow soldiers. Chapter entitled `The Route to New Plymouth' details the march northwards from Patea to New Plymouth and the settlers met en route. Possibly in 1865. Chapter recounting the 23rd October 1865 in Wanganui and the arrival of General Chute. Also comments on the Hau Hau, Treaty of Waitangi and the activities of the colonial forces. Chapter Five entitled `Court martial in Maoriland'. Details a court martial in the field during General Whitmore's Ruakaturi [Ruakituri] campaign in pursuit of Te Kooti, 1868. Chapter entitled `A Nights ride 38 years ago. From Cambridge to Taupo', 1869. Ward details preparing to leave the military camp to carry a message down to Taupo and possibly on to Napier.
