Description: Includes reports and correspondence about the activities of Maori tribes and chiefs, mostly of a military nature, for the Whanganui and Waikato districts and the Kingitanga. Also includes a letter from a european settler (identity unknown ?) to a relative about an attack on his residence, which he apparently survived ! Also contains hand written copies and printed matter relating lists of Maori taken prisoner at Rangiriri. The hand written lists (letter) also include the names of returned "rebels"; lists including women and children; deaths for certain years. These are usually arranged by year or kainga (place of residence), or Iwi / hapu (tribe or sub-tribe). All lists relate to Waikato. Finding Aids: Piece level inventory available.

Joseph Burnett and Mary Ann (née Burnett) emigrated from England to America circa 1830, and then to New Zealand in 1856 with their children Cornelius, Josephine Augusta, Alfred, and Emma. They had lived in Oneida County, New York State, known as a centre of the abolitionist movement, and in Cincinnati where they were involved with the Underground Railroad, helping runaway enslaved people. In Wanganui they opened a confectionery and bakery. From 1870 they lived at 'Oneida' homestead and farm property (also known as Trenton House), in Fordell, east of Whanganui. He describes their departure from Waipukurau, going through the Manawatu Gorge, reaching Palmerston North, Otaki and going through Rangihaeata's and Te Rauparaha's territory, Wellington, Paekakariki, Wanganui, Nukumaru, Waitotara, New Plymouth, he gives his views on the Taranaki wars, taking a steamer to Auckland and travelling to the Waikato River where he also discusses the New Zealand wars, then going to Okoroire for bathing and where they spent eight days, then moving on to Kaipara where they sailed on the harbour. The first main entry in the notebook says 'Rotorua: Te Kapenga fight 1870' and inside front cover includes Cowan's itinerary from November 18, 1918 to January 6, 1919, the various places he visited and sometimes who he interviewed there. Description: Collection comprises a typescript and manuscript article `Notes on the Maori disturbances in New Zealand during 1868 & 1869. By a Danish officer'. This article was originally written in Danish in 1868 by Hans Thiele and later translated into English. This translation was written by Thiele and his daughter Marie Madeleine Thiele (see note at end of article). Thiele served with the yeomanry cavalry who aided the Armed Constabulary and the Colonial Government troops under Colonel Whitmore who were fighting Titokowaru's forces in the South Taranki region. The war was engaged over rights to confiscated land and this history is highlighted in these accounts. Beginning at Wairoa (Waverley) this first hand account is detailed and gives a great insight into the tactics and practices of the colonial forces and Titokowaru's warriors, and their various military engagements. Thiele indicates the number of casualties and comments on the Hauhau's rites of cannibalism and the practice of removing the human heart from those slain in battle. Theile comments on pa sites, redoubts and fortifications. The narrative traces the defeat of the colonial troops in the early part of the campaign in 1868 then continues into 1869 as Colonel Whitmore purses Titokowaru at the Waitotara River and on to Patea. The article ends with Thiele detailing the removal of fifty Maori prisoners by the paddle steamer `Sturt' from Wanganui to Wellington. Includes photocopy of Thiele's obituary `Old colonist dies' published in the Fiji Times, 27 June 1917. Also a detailed biography of Hans Thiele compiled by Karol London. Description: Collection comprises love-letters from Colonel Lyon to his wife, 1865-1875; his letters to others and her letters to other friends and relatives; letters from England to them; papers of daughter, Blanche Lyon together with miscellaneous family papers and photographs. Source of title - Supplied title Colonel William Charles Lyon served with the 92nd Highlanders in the Crimea. He retired from the army after losing an arm in a shooting accident and emigrated to New Zealand in 1858. He commanded the Waikato Militia in the 1860s seeing action, during the Land Wars, at Opotiki, Patea, Wanganui, Taranaki and Tauranga. He married Sophia Susannah Rawlinson at St Paul's Church, Auckland in 1865. They were constantly separated by his career and she mainly raised their seven children.
