Description: The papers largely consist of correspondence spanning four decades between Jane Oates and her sister, Margaret Morten, who lived in Derbyshire, England, but include letters written by Samuel, John Morten (husband of Margaret), various children of the Oates and Morten families, and by various other family friends and relatives. Letters give details about family matters, the concerns of stock and crop farming, adverse weather conditions, etc both in New Zealand and rural England. The collection includes photocopy of passenger contract ticket for and photograph of Jane Oates and children on their departure for New Zealand, as well as genealogical material, and a letter written by Watters to her family in New Zealand when she was visiting the family home and relatives at Monyash, England in 1955 Source of title - Supplied by Library Other - See MS-Papers-8236 for further letters from the Oates family in New Zealand to their family in England Accompanying material - Accompanied by copies of photographs (originals in Photographic Archive) and material relating to the Rev. Description: Shipboard journal of a young boy, John McGowan, travelling to Wellington on the ship 'James Lister' with his parents and siblings. Content includes a description of family activities, a drawing of their accommodation (at end of journal), and a poem in memory of sister Agnes Spence McGowan who died aged 17). Siblings are referred to by nicknames. Other - Microfilm is available for interloan, duplicate copy held by Microfilm Services Arrangement: On the main title target for this microfilm Agnes McGowan is listed as the author - this is not correct, it should read John McGowan The McGowan family of Orkney, Scotland, emigrated to New Zealand in 1865. Parents William Stewart McGowan and Agnes (nee Wood), were accompanied by their children, including John McGowan. Daughter Agnes Spence had died in 1861. Description: Elsie May Bartle; Shipboard diary of her travels from Norfolk, England to Wellington, New Zealand during November 1890 on board the New Zealand Steamship Co ship SS Kaikoura. A daily record of the voyage kept by 11 year old Elsie Bartle travelling with her family in steerage class, and transcribed and printed by her granddaughter E M Price. Diary entries from 11 November 1890, the day the family left Norfolk for London, till they arrived at Lyttelton on 1 Jan 1891. Elsie gives a full description of events on board, including Neptune's visit on Crossing the Line and Christmas Day celebrations. Included in the booklet is an introduction by E M Price, a photograph of the family taken prior to their departure, a copy of a page from Elsie's diary and an index to people, ships, places and events. Description: MacGregor records the family's activities, shipboard events and travel conditions; later entries describe family life in Dunedin and Oamaru and the diarist's impression of herself (15 Jul 1881-6 Jun 1886) Source of title - Supplied title Accompanying material - Accompanied by 3 pages copied from Scholfield, Dictionary of New Zealand Biography relating to MacGregor family MacGregor was born in Scotland in 1866. In 1881 her father, the Rev Dr James MacGregor, left his teaching post at the New Free College at Edinburgh and emigrated with his wife and nine children to New Zealand. One child died during the voyage. The family settled in Dunedin for five months and then Rev McGregor answered a call to St Columba's Church in Oamaru. The diary was written by Agnes as a young woman of 14 on board the `Jessie Redman' which departed Greenock on 15 July 1881 and arrived at Port Chalmers on 24 October 1881.
