Includes reminiscences of her childhood in England written between 1891 and 1905. Also essays, recipe books, poetry, sketches and other writings, as well as some personal material associated with her husband who had a private school for boys at French Farm, Akaroa Includes shipboard diary kept by T S Baker on board the Dallam Tower, 11 May-26 Jul 1873, and a fragment of the original passenger list. The ship left London in May 1873. The ship encountered a cyclone in July 1873 which dismasted the ship. Some passengers were transshipped to the `Cape Clear' for Sydney and others stayed on the `Dallam Tower' to Melbourne where they transshipped to the SS Albion for the final voyage to New Zealand Josephine `Dodo' Dicken emigrated from England in 1873 with her father Thomas and sisters and brothers. The Family settled on a property at French Farm, Banks Peninsula. She married Thomas Southey Baker in Christchurch, 17 December 1878. They had four daughters. Miss Christine Little - The Donovan story

Description: The essay is the story of Patrick Donovan, an Irishman who came to Auckland in 1840 with his first wife, Julia McAuliffe and their children. They first went to Hobart and then Melbourne before arriving in New Zealand. He established himself in business in Auckland as innkeeper of the Shamrock, Rose and Thistle, Shortland Crescent, and later farmed at Onehunga. He was the owner of land in various parts of Auckland. In 1853 he was elected to the Auckland Provincial Council, serving till 1855. Julia died in 1845 and he remarried Elizabeth Scott in the same year. Description: `From pioneer days to centennial year' by J McHale of Burwood, written ca 1950 recounts the story of Mr & Mrs McHale, and their four children, in particular Harry McHale. The family commenced their voyage from Bristol to Lyttelton on the `Cashmere' in 1859. An epidemic of measles broke out and the ship returned to England. Mrs McHale and 3 children (including Harry) were put ashore while Mr McHale and the elder son continued onto New Zealand on the `Cashmere'; Mrs McHale and children came onto New Zealand in the `Zealandia' a few months later. The family first settled at Pigeon Bay. Mr McHale obtained work as a carpenter erecting new buildings for Mr Montgomery's sawmilling business. After a year or two McHale bought land at Little Akaloa at a small bay called Raupo Bay. Also `Memoirs of Pigeon Bay' by H J McHale, pioneer (mss in pencil). Description: Reminiscences describing his family background from the time of his birth in Tasmania, his childhood, moving to Melbourne, first jobs and finally going to sea. He writes of the vessels he served on (listed under Name below), his shipboard companions, their various cargoes and ports of call and describes in detail daily routines on board and onshore. One of his voyages as an apprentice was on the `Water lily' to Rarotonga, Tahiti, Archew [Atiu], Penrhyn, Starbuck and Auckland, New Zealand. He visited most New Zealand ports on coastal traders and was also involved in trans-Tasman vessels. He concludes with descriptions of his family's settling in the Bay of Plenty region on a farm on the Rangitaiki River and later at Kopuriki.
