Description: Contains letters from Maori to Buller, in his capacity as a lawyer, with regard to Maori land tenure and transactions, finances and other related issues; a number of the letters are from Hoani Meihana Te Rangiotu of Rangitane, and some of these concern the operation of a timber mill at Manawatu Some of the letters are addressed to James Buller and relate to the Wesleyan Maori mission; there is a long letter from Hunia Te Hakeke about his role in the New Zealand Wars, and a love letter to him from Niniwa-i-te-rangi; some of the letters contain lists of people from Ngati Apa and Kai Tahu Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: Collection comprises love-letters from Colonel Lyon to his wife, 1865-1875; his letters to others and her letters to other friends and relatives; letters from England to them; papers of daughter, Blanche Lyon together with miscellaneous family papers and photographs. Source of title - Supplied title Colonel William Charles Lyon served with the 92nd Highlanders in the Crimea. He retired from the army after losing an arm in a shooting accident and emigrated to New Zealand in 1858. He commanded the Waikato Militia in the 1860s seeing action, during the Land Wars, at Opotiki, Patea, Wanganui, Taranaki and Tauranga. He married Sophia Susannah Rawlinson at St Paul's Church, Auckland in 1865. They were constantly separated by his career and she mainly raised their seven children. He was in command of the Auckland Volunteer District from 1884 until his death in 1887. Quantity: 20 folder(s). 0.20 Linear Metres.
