Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Walter Dalziel; brief history of the farm and family; marriage certificate for Christopher Dalziel and Mary Anne Wighton, 1866; photographs (see below). The original owner of the land at Tuapeka West (later known as Braewick farm) was Christopher Dalziel who bought 100 acres in 1874. In the 1890s a further 630 acres were acquired. In 2005 the property was owned by Walter Dalziel, with his son Hamish being actively involved in the farm. Awarded the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award to mark over 100 years of continuous ownership by one family. Quantity: 1 folder(s). Description: Shows head and shoulders portraits of two women, one man and an infant. These are selected from Plate 70 in Dumont DUrville's "Voyage de la Corvette l'Astrolabe ... (Paris, 1833), portraits 3,5 and 6, and therefore show Ekara, young girl of the Bay of Islands, and Tawiti and his wife. Tawiti's wife holds a baby wrapped in her cloak by her shoulder. Plate 176 from an unknown publication in German or Dutch, derived at least partly from Dumont D'Urville's "Voyage de la Corvette l'Astrolabe". Other Titles - New Zealand. A flagstaff flying the Union Jack is alongside the near wall of Barrett's Hotel Copy of a wash drawing 'Barrett's Hotel, Port Nicholson' owned by the Royal Society Tasmania, and held in the collection of the Tasmanian Art Gallery and Museum, Hobart The 'raupo house' had a roof made of raupo and was said to be the first house built on Thorndon Beach (Thorndon Quay). Description: Shows six Maori men launching a canoe into waves. Palm trees or tall tree ferns are at the right. Engraving has been cut from page containing 2 engravings; see full page at A-256-028. Image of canoe, and possibly the whole image, is derived from a work by Louis Auguste de Sainson 'Village a l'anse de l'Astrolabe, Nouvelle Zelande' showing Astrolabe Bay (Golden Bay, South Island) not Mercury Bay, with local Maori dragging a canoe into the water, in 1827 during a French visit to the area. The palm trees suggest a scant knowledge of New Zealand geography and flora on the part of the engraver.
