Description: Show Taranaki scenes: Interior of George Curtis' house, Omata; Exterior of George Curtis' house, Omata; Alpha flourmill, Huatoki Valley and Victoria Road from Marsland Hill, New Plymouth; Henui (Weekstown) from the coastal dunes; Unidentified New Plymouth outskirts (possibly now Tukapa St / Westown). Attribution based on style. George Curtis arrived in New Plymouth in 1849 on the 'Pekin'. "As soon as a raupo house could be erected by the Maoris at Omata, George Curtis and his family went to live on his farm". (NZ Biogs, 1967, vol. 1, p. 53). Supplied titles. Description: The right side of a two-part panorama with A-292-052. This section of the image shows the Paekakariki Hill Road winding down to Paekakariki and the Kapiti Coast. The left section (A-292-052) shows a soldier reclining on Paekakariki Hill, beside the road, looking north up the Kapiti Coast with Mt Taranaki appearing above the horizon on the left. Description: Shows a symmetrical, slightly stylised, elevation from the sea of Mount Taranaki (Egmont), with its lower slopes bush-clad. In the left distance is the silhouette of a range of hills, possibly peaking in Pouakai, with Patuha in the extreme left distance. If these are correctly identified, the view is from the South-west. Note that original sketch was made on 2 February 1845. Other Titles - 2 February 1845. Description: Bridge over small stream in the foreground, a fenced in house with a tall gable and an outbuilding, with several trees in its garden in the middle ground, Mt Taranaki in the background See Recollections of Travel in New Zealand and Australia by J. C. Crawford, London, 1880, p. 86, where Crawford mentions visiting "the parsonage near the Waiwakaio" in the summer of 1847. The parsonage for St Mary's was at Te Henui, some two miles away from the church. It had half an acre of land with it. Its first occupant was William Bolland, who died on 29 May 1847, presumably shortly after Crawford's visit. Description: Shows wrecked ship at the mouth of the river, tent with flag flying, surrounded by barrels, two anchors and a number of Maori salvaging the contents of the wreck Other Titles - Wangaehu River, with Mount Taranaki in the distance. Whangaehu River Extended Title - From: Brees, S C. Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand (London, 1847) plate 4, no 9 In his "Pictorial illustrations of New Zealand" p.9 Brees notes "The River Wangaehu is to the south of Wanganui. The wreck shown in the View occurred while the author was travelling the beach, the master having mistaken this for the latter river". So the wreck would have occured between 1842 and 1845.
