Mitchell, Leonard Cornwall, 1901-1971 :[A reconstruction of the signing of the Treaty o...

Date: 1840 - 1949

By: Mitchell, Leonard Cornwall, 1901-1971

Reference: A-242-002

Description: A group of Maori in the left foreground, being challenged by one man (Marupo) with taiaha. The flags of many nations are strung along the inside of the roof of a marquee, with tables beyond Marupo. Kawiti is signing the Treaty, watched by witness Rev. Richard Taylor and Mr James Stuart Freeman (standing at right of table-end). Beyond this group is another table (both tables are draped in the Union Jack) with Hone Heke (in cap) shaking hands with Governor William Hobson. The seated figure on Hobson's left (i. e. our right) is James Busby. Other figures are also individually identified in the key on the verso of the work, including Joseph Nias, Willoughby Shortland, Rev. Henry Williams, William Colenso, Samuel Ironside, Felton Mathew, Charles Baker, Tamati Waka Nene, Patuone, Hakitara, Tareha, Moka and Wharerahi. This is thought to be the most accurate of the reconstructions of the signing of the Treaty. However original accounts state the the Rev. Henry Williams was seated to the right of Governor Hobson, beside Captain Nias and the other clergy standing behind Williams behind the table. The marquee ws 150 ft long with the Governor's raised platform at the end and some 600 people inside. It would therefore not have been possible to see outside as shown in this view. Accounts do not indicate that there were separate tables. In addition, Kawiti refused to sign the Treaty on 6 February and only agreed to sign it later, after being urged to do so by other Maori chiefs Extended Title - From: New Zealand Journal of Agriculture, January 1949. (Cover illustration) Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Physical Description: Photolithograph, coloured, 260 x 210 mm.

Rollason, James Bernard Richard Walter, 1856-1906: [Ngauranga, late 1840s]. [ca 1900]

Date: 1845 - 1890 - 1850 - 1900

By: Rollason, James Bernard Richard Walter, 1856-1906; Futter, Frederick Roy, 1906-2001

Reference: G-701

Description: Shows a coach and four about to cross a bridge over Ngauranga stream in the foreground. The Hutt Road is visible to the right. Three buildings, including Futter's Tavern in the background. There is a half-canoe monument to Te Wharepouri, upright in the ground beyond the buildings and below the hills Quite possibly a copy of an earlier work by another artist. Other known historical paintings by Rollason appear to be copied. He was known to be painting around 1900. See 'Ngauranga, late 1840s' negative 19460 1/2 for a possible original for Rollason's painting. The artist for 'Ngauranga, late 1840s' is unknown and the photographic print was among collection items held by Anthony Murray-Oliver, with no accompanying documentation. It seems likely that the painting was lent for copying in the 1960s. One extra detail in 'Ngauranga, late 1840s' is a cross on top of the hill closest to the sea; however, it lacks the additional cart and horse on the far side of the stream. The painting includes a view of Futter's Tavern. See also Brees, S.C. N'Houranga. engraving, plate 5, no.8 in his Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand (London, 1847) for an earlier view of Ngauranga with the monument to Te Wharepouri Other Titles - Ngahauranga Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - Rollason [in red brush-point] Quantity: 1 oil(s). Messenger, Arthur Herbert 1877-1962 :Taupo, Massacre Bay. 1921 [i.e 1844]

Date: 1844 - 1921

By: Messenger, Arthur Herbert, 1877-1962; Barnicoat, John Wallis, 1814-1905; Cowan, James, 1870-1943

Reference: A-173-015

Description: View at Taupo Point, just south of Separation Point, Golden Bay, showing Taupo Pa with palisades and buildings and a bush-clad knoll beyond, the sea and several inshore islands. Depending upon the extent of Messenger's knowledge, the boat anchored off the beach is probably a Deal boat, and the mizzen was a "standing lug". The foresail was a "dipping lug" (see note below, and letter from Pat W Win, AT 13/14/1, 24 December 1999) A copy of John Wallis Barnicoat's eye-witness drawing "Taupo, Massacre Bay, March 1844", negative 11570 1/2. The original drawing is in a private collection but the Library has a photograph. Probably drawn for James Cowan's The New Zealand Wars, but not used. Two Deal boats and six Deal boat men were brought to New Zealand by the Nelson Preliminary Expedition which entered Nelson Haven in November 1841. One of the boat men was James Smith Cross who became Nelson's second harbourmaster. (See letter from Pat W Win, AT 13/14/1, 24 December 1999). Artist unknown :[Reconstruction of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi. ca 1940 or 19...

Date: 1940 - 1840

By: Haddon, Oriwa Tahupotiki (Rev), 1898-1958; New Zealand. Department of Māori Affairs

Reference: A-114-038

Description: An unfinished work showing a group of Maori and Pakeha standing around a table in the open air, part of a tent sketched in to the left, behind the group. One man is signing the document, watched by two Pakeha men in uniform (William Hobson and somebody else), a third Pakeha man, probably Henry Williams, is in clerical garb with two further Pakeha men in the background. Eleven Maori are seated in the foreground, and nine more are standing around the table. To the right a pohutukawa tree is in flower and the Bay of Islands with a ship at anchor can be seen in the background. Not completely accurate since the pohutukawa is shown as flowering in February, when such an event in Northland is over by late December. Likely to be a later reconstruction Very similar to a lost oil painting by Oriwa Haddon, formerly on display and owned by the Treaty House, Waitangi, from early 1934. The oil painting was reproduced in an article in the Weekly news, 31 January 1934, p 38-39. On the basis of this similarity, it is possible that Oriwa Haddon is the artist of this work, possibly a preliminary version of his oil. Other Titles - Oriwa Tahupotiki Haddon, attributed works Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, 185 x 275 mm

[Bowring, Walter Armiger] 1874-1931 :[Jillett's whaling station on Kapiti Island, 1844]...

Date: 1844 - 1907

By: Bowring, Walter Armiger, 1874-1931; Gilfillan, John Alexander, 1793-1863; Turnbull, Alexander Horsburgh, 1868-1918

Reference: D-018-012

Description: View looking down over buildings of Jillett's (sometimes spelled Gillett or Gillet) whaling station spread out along the Waiorua beach at Kapiti Island. Copy of original sketch by J A Gilfillan (see New Zealand Times, 7 Aug. 1907, p. 4 referring to the creation of this watercolour copy in 1907; TL 3/1/1, 10/8/83; and Photo File print of ink sketch by Gilfillan with same title, held by Hocken Library). Edward Jerningham Wakefield noted [1839] that some of the English style wattle and daub cottages at Waiorua-Kapiti were occupied by Maori chiefs (particularly Te Rangihiroa d.1842). This was also the scene of the battle "Waiorua", aka "Whakapaetai", in 1824. The main settlement was the site of the pa "Tawhiriataka", while the northern part of the half moon bay is the approximate site of "Ngaiopiko" pa. Amongst its principal residents were the chiefs Te Rangihiroa, Te Hiko, Metapere Te Waipunaahau, Tungia, Te Matoha, Te Rau-o-te-Rangi, Te Tahua Rene, Ropata Hurumutu and others. Numerous whalers lived and worked from this site during the 1840s including Jenkins, Nicol, Bolton, Cootes and O'Meara who was amongst the last whalers to farm the northern part of the Island. Other Titles - Gillet's; Gilletts Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour 340 x 875 mm Provenance: Collection of Alexander Turnbull?
