Artist unknown :Maori Conference ; before ; after. [1860 or ca 1880?]
Date: 1879 - 1860 - 1881
By: Forbes, David W, active 1950s-2000s
Reference: A-279-003
Description: A cartoon showing a Maori man about to tuck into an enormous plum pudding with a large plate of meat to one side, in the "before" view; and looking very well-fed and fat with many empty plates on the table in the "after" view. He is seated in a room with leadlight windows. The room with leadlight windows may be the Melanesian Mission building at Kohimarama (Mission Bay) where Governor Gore Browne convened a Maori Conference in 1860. Another possibility is that the conference is one of the series of conferences at Orakei in 1879, 1880 and 1881, to discuss and ratify the terms of the Treaty of Waitangi, 1840. The latter conferences were held in a building constructed by Paora Tuhaere, probably lacking leadlight windows. The image implies that the Conference was simply an excuse for gluttony. Inscriptions: Recto - above & below image: title Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Sepia ink on cream wove paper 121 x 193 mm Provenance: Purchased from a book dealer (Mr Wreden) in Palo Alto, California, by David Forbes, 1970s.

Description: An extensive view of the Wairarapa Plain with Wairarapa Lake on the left, Rimutaka Range and Tararua Ranges in the background. A boar hunt is underway in the foreground, with one Maori man and a dog to the right. The Maori man is dressed in traditional costume, and appears to be carrying a rope. Bracken and ferns in the foreground and clumps of bush on the plain. The accompanying text reads: This district lies about fifty miles from Wellington by the nearest road. Mr Charles Kettle, one of the Company's Assistant-Surveyors, ascended the Manawatu River, which flows along the other side of the Tararua Mountains, and entered this plain by rounding the low spurs at the extreme right of the view. The forest consists of the largest trees. The open tracts are covered with grass, feern and tutu bushes. Wild hogs abound in this plain. The Ruamahanga flows through the midst of it, and passes through Lake Wairarapa into Palliser Bay. The plain of the Ruamahanga is about sixty miles in length, with an average breadth of twelve miles. There is one small native village at its northern extremity, and another on the beach at Palliser Bay, as well as a whaling station supplied from Wellington. Lake Wairarapa is ten miles long, and from two to three miles broad. Between the lake and the sea several settlers from Wellington have recently squatted with large herds of cattle, which they drove along the sea-coast. Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Description: Head and shoulders profile portrait of Te Rangihaeata, a peacock feather in his top-knot, an albatross feather ear adornment and a fine flax cloak. One of a series of portraits of at least twenty Maori men and women done by Nelson artist Isaac Coates. Rangihaeata & Rauparaha, with their wives and whanau, visited Nelson in March 1843, the likely date of this portrait. The artist made various watercolour copies of this portrait, but this appears to be an earlier version than the one held in the Library's collection at A-286-014 and the one in the Peabody Museum, Salem, Massachussets. There is a (probably) still earlier version in the Bett Collection, Nelson Provincial Museum. Other Titles - Rangihaeata Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour & ink, 284 x 191 mm Provenance: Purchase: Nigel Tully, Terra Australis, Wollstonecraft, New South Wales, 1985.

Description: Recto: Head & shoulders portrait of Te Kooti and smaller portrait of an unidentified man (although he is most probably Te Kooti, also, wearing a hat with its brim turned up at the front). Formerly attributed to Richard Laishley. However it is more likely to be the work of Thomas Ryan who was present at Tama te Kopua in 1887, when te Kooti was addressing Rotorua Maori. Ruyan drew Te Kooti in profile (see A-114-004-1 - Te Kooti or Turuki addressing Rotorua natives in 1887' - on the other side of this sheet). Ryan is very likely to have produced this drawing as well. The handwriting and style of drawing both appear to be Ryan's Other Titles - Laishley, Richard, 1815-1897. Te Kooti at Rotorua. 1887. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Pencil 210 x 140 mm
