Description: 'Otiwera Pass' the valley leading down the Rimutaka Road towards the Wairarapa, with the plain in the distance In the text accompanying this illustration, Brees writes: 'This represents a low part of the Remutaka mountains and the valley of the Otiwera, with the plains of the Wairarapa in the distance. The author passed down this ravine on the 7th and 8th February 1843, accompanied by A Kuri and party, while exploring the road from Port Nicholson.' One tree to the left in the foreground is a rata in flower and there is a tree-fern on the right. The artist is incorrect in his statement about the Rimutaka Range being part of the Ruahine Range. It is part of the Tararua Range. The phrase 'anglice Waidrop' refers to the common nineteenth century English version of the Maori word Wairarapa. A construction worker remarks 'Once that's done there's a wide, slippery bit we could look at...' Below him is another sign-post labelled 'Key's Mile'. The cartoon is titled 'News: State Highway 2 over the Rimutakas is being made safer'. Muldoon's Corner, not named after Sir Robert Muldoon, is one of the dangerous bends.
