Description: View looking down onto Lake Rotorua, with Mokoia in the distance. The Ohinemutu peninsula is on the right with steam rising from amongst the Maori whare. In the foreground is a whare on the left, a palisade and several Maori figures. Probably copied from a drawing by John Johnson or a copy of that drawing by Cuthbert Clarke. See Cuthbert Clarke;s 'Ohinemotu. From an outline by Dr Johnson [1849]' a conte drawing in the British Library (Add. MS 19954, folio 29, no. 31) of which the Turnbull holds a photograph. Description: Landscape sketch by Charles Heaphy circa 1852. Shows view of paddlers on five waka, four with sails, approaching shore in a curved bay of a harbour. In the middle distance is a small cliffed island, and in the background are hills, one with a distinctive blunted cone. Likely to be a view from Oahuru Bay towards Motupohukuo Island (Turkey Island), Coromandel Peninsula, with Motutere / Castle Rock in the background. Description: A series of drawings: "Scotch Jock's" is a thatched-roof cottage with a chimney and a lean-to set amongst bush with 2 men seated on a rock outside, copied from an 1849 drawing by William Swainson; "Buck's store" is a tiny wooden building set amongst bush, with bags of goods and three men outside, copied from William Swainson's "Buck's Portable Store while in Stokes Vally in Oct 1847" (neg. 119176 1/2, privately-owned); a third sketch of a man reclining on a rock, untitled; a fourth and fifth of ngaio trees, both titled "ngaio". Scotch Jock was John Nicol; Buck was George Green Buck. Te Paripari was a settlement above the shore between Paekakariki and Pukerua Bay.
