Description: Shows head and shoulders portraits of two women, one man and an infant. These are selected from Plate 70 in Dumont DUrville's "Voyage de la Corvette l'Astrolabe ... (Paris, 1833), portraits 3,5 and 6, and therefore show Ekara, young girl of the Bay of Islands, and Tawiti and his wife. Tawiti's wife holds a baby wrapped in her cloak by her shoulder. Plate 176 from an unknown publication in German or Dutch, derived at least partly from Dumont D'Urville's "Voyage de la Corvette l'Astrolabe". Other Titles - New Zealand. Description: Shows full-length figure of Hongi Hongi (a.k.a. Nga Toki), wearing mats or blankets, a greenstone earring, and holding a greenstone mere in his right hand. He stands before the posts of the pa enclosure at Ngahuruhuru Pa, four miles from Otawhao. Angas visited New Zealand in 1844. This is a redrawing of his lithograph Hongi Hongi, plate 11 in his The New Zealanders illustrated (London, 1847). The copyist is probably H. W. Kirkwood One of four lithographs on one sheet, all copies of work by Angas and probably all copied by Kirkwood. Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of New Zealand made by the Prince of Wales in 1920. Many of the images are of military inspections and displays by school children. There are also displays of Maori dancing and singing, the sailors of the HMS Renown, on which the prince had travelled , prior to their soccer match in Dunedin, the prince addressing the crowds etc. A number of the images are in two-part panoramas. Also included are four scenic photographs by the New Zealand Tourist Department which may have been taken in 1903. The photographer for the tour photographs was Guy. They include a number of photographs of their house, garden and neighbourhood but also a postcard of Paekakariki beach, a postcard of two wagons with passengers passing through the Devil's Elbow between Buttermere and Keswick in the English Lake District, seven men with penny-farthing bicycles ca 1880, a carte de visite of four young Maori wearing kakahu taken by Swan & Wrigglesworth, and a photograph of a sketch of Porerua Bay near Wanganui (mid 19th century). The collection includes a letter to a Mr Ellingham from I W Macdonald of 8 Lower Watt Street, Wadestown offering him the photographs. Description: Album of scenic photographs, chiefly taken by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department, with views of the North Island and South Island. North Island scenes include a number of tourist views of Maori, showing carved meeting houses; a group performing a haka; two women demonstrating the hongi; a young woman wearing a feather cloak, hei tiki and huia feathers, and holding a mere; a group of young boys in a haka pose; a woman smoking a pipe; a group of children bathing in a hot pool at Ohinemutu; and Mr. Nelson's carved house at Whakarewarewa. Other North Island scenes show Mount Taranaki, the Auckland wharves, Lake Waikaremoana, and a man fishing at the Ohau Channel, Rotorua. South Island views cover Lakes Wakatipu, Manapouri and Te Anau; the Tasman Glacier; peaks in the Southern Alps; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; a team of four horses with a laden Cobb & Co coach on a ferry, crossing the Mangahua [i.e. Inangahua] River, the Lyell River Bridge and Hawks Crag, all in the Buller Gorge.
