Description: Extensive view framed by tree ferns and flax in the foreground, looking down unto a small river winding through cultivated fields and scattered houses, with the kainga mentioned in the title presumably the cluster of buildings to the right. There is a ridge of low hills beyond the near river valley then the extensive plain of the Waihou River, formerly called the Thames, with mountains in the distance The original watercolour by Liardet is at C-137-005. The Thames River, named by Captain Cook, is now known by its original Maori name as the Waihou River. The "Kawaeranga" River is the Kauaerangi. Mt Pukekawa does not appear to be a name used in the area depicted any longer - the closest Pukekawa is some 50 kilometres to the west on the far side of the Waikato River. On the verso is a pencil and faint watercolour drawing of a pair of pink dancing shoes and a fan. Other Titles - Embouchure, Kauaerangi River, Waihou River Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - Title, both artists' names and dates, in brown brushpoint in cursive calligraphic style.; Verso - "Mrs Anderson Coromandel sc" plus framing instructions dating from the 1960s. Description: Shows a Maori man and woman at the far left, standing outside a whare with carved tekoteko figure. Behind the whare is a palisade and to the far right a waka is being launched into the sea. This work has also been know as 'Meeting house and stockade' A third foreground figure has been pencilled in beside the couple at the left, but has not been completed. This painting was used as the basis for 'Stranger's house (Houraki Pah)', Plate 5 in R A Oliver's 'A series of lithographic drawings from sketches in New Zealand' (London, Dickinson Bros, 1852) Title from letter of authentication on backing board (accompanies painting in same folder). Description: Shows the front of a small single-storey cottage with thatched roof and a verandah supported by five pillars. The cottage has two or three front windows and a front door, two chimneys and a lean-to, with a picket fence running from the house on both sides. A circular garden bed is in front and a cabbage tree, flax and another plant, possibly a fern, are to the right The Rev. Dr Robert Maunsell lived in this raupo cottage from 1838 to 1843. It was superseded by a 6-room wooden dwelling that burned down after three weeks' occupation. Maunsell and his wife were hosts to Governor Hobson in March 1842, with Chief Justice Martin, Abel Best and Edward Shortland also present. Dr Johnson was away from New Zealand between November 1844 and November 1846. He must have made this drawing from an earlier version or possibly initialled and dated it when he gave it to Mrs Hobson in England Other Titles - Maraetai Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - J. Description: A view of the waterfront at Kawhia, Waikato region, with St Elmo boarding house in the foreground. Includes a cliff at each end of the inlet and houses around the harbour. At the far end amongst some houses is a large Norfolk Pine tree. The two storey building immediately behind the Norfolk pine had a business on the ground floor and a hall above which was called Scott's Hall. Photograph taken between 1908-1915 by Jonathan Ltd. August 2022, researcher provided information about the two storey building immediately behind the Norfolk pine It was built in 1903. and later became known as Ward's Hall and was used as a cinema from about 1914 to the early 1950s.
