The mayor Hugh McDermid, wheels the first barrow to begin reclamation at Mussel Bay for the proposed railway workshops. However Dunedin opposition won the workshops for Hillside, and the site became the 'old' recreation ground. Each differs slightly, one having been printed with slightly larger, heavier dots of colour, giving a darker overall effect (easily studied through a strong magnifying glass). There are ships in the water at Port Chalmers, and the houses of the Port on the side of the hill below. Quarantine Island can be seen in the harbour waters in the centre. Larnach's Castle (built 1873-1876) may be the building visible in the distance on the hills opposite. Aramoana is the low-lying sandy area on the far left. Detached from: Welch, J. S. [Album of Sketches] 1876 The tunnel referred to in the title (not visible) is the railway tunnel above Deborah Bay.
