Railways album 9

Description: Album of publicity photographs including designs for advertisements for use in the new Zealand Railway Magazine; designs for posters for use in Railways Ticket Offices and one for a large neon lighting sign "Suggested `Claude Neon' Display for New Zealand Railway Publicity Department, Wellington. `Travel by train'". One photograph is entitled "`Post' corner 1880. Now site of King's Chambers". A number of images show a [Labour Day?] parade of marching people, and floats some of which are advertising NZ Railways holiday destinations, with slogans reading `Come to Rotorua', `Come to Waitomo', `Come to The Chateau Tongariro'. There are designs of title pages for the New Zealand Railways Magazine; a view of a commemorative key with a sheaf of corn on the handle in a presentation box; and designs for a programme of events surround the laying of the foundation stone for the new Government Railway Station, Wellington, N.Z. by HRH the Duke of Gloucester, December 17th 1934. These are followed by photographs taken during the Duke's tour of New Zealand, including crowd scenes in Wellington, Maori celebrations of welcome at Ngaruawahia, and scenes in the Rotorua thermal area. There are a few individual and group portraits of the management and administrative staff of New Zealand Railways, most unidentified. Description: Photographic prints collected by Lancely Treadwell comprising: -two group portraits of men in army uniform, relating to Bob Davidson's service during World War I, taken circa 1914 and 1915 by unidentified photographers. One shows a group in Egypt with a pyramid and a sphynx in the background behind the men. -Parade on Courtenay Place/Cambridge Terrace, Wellington, circa 1930, taken by Frank Giles Barker from the site of what is the Embassy Theatre in 2014. One of the floats is a locomotive. The donor said Davidson was from Feilding. The Davidson recorded in the name authority by the archivist is the only Robert Davidson on the Centotaph database that is listed as being from Feilding. He is not identified in the photographs. The name M A Bassett features as an inscription on one of the prints but this name is not known to the donor. Description: Programme of the peace celebrations held in Te Awamutu, Saturday 19 July (Soldiers' Day), Sunday 20 July (Thanksgiving Day), and Monday 21 July (Children's Day). Saturday events included a procession, addresses, tributes, soldiers' dinner, military sports, fireworks and a dance. Sunday events included a Presbyterian church parade, United public service and Sacred concert. Monday events included a procession, children's sports, Empire Theatre concert and a dance at the Town Hall. The front cover shows an illustration of the angel of Peace holding up its left hand in victory, with a broken sword in its right hand. Around are the shields of Great Britain, America, Belgium, France, Italy, Servia, Roumania and Japan. The illustration is engraved by Wilson Engraving, Auckland. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Small photograph album containing commercial and original photographs of New Zealand scenes taken by unidentified photographers circa 1914-1919, probably originally belonging to Cecilia Jenkin (McColl). Includes several photographs of World War One victory celebrations in Oamaru, including a parade, the Waitaki County Council Chambers with bunting wrapped around the front columns, and a Waitaki County Council truck decorated in greenery with costumed people on the back. Also includes photographs of people in fancy dress (one group has a sign saying "Ancient Order of Tricky Troubadours"), Oamaru Chief Post Office, a boys' fife band, streetscapes and country scenes. The commercial photographs include "H.M.S. New Zealand", two of biplanes inscribed "J. Griffiths photo" and "protected 10.11.14", and Timaru Gardens. Photographs of "Burke's Pass Hotel", the interior of the Hermitage and Mueller's Hut, Mount Cook are inscribed with the location and with "Tanner Bros Ld. photo". The album has the number 145 on a small sticker on the front cover. Title supplied by Library. Quantity: 1 album(s) 24 photographic prints.
