Description: Full length squatting stylised portrait of Te Rangihaeata holding a pipe or other object and carved by himself. It formed the lower portion of the central pillar supporting the roof of Rangihaeata's house on Mana Island, the house being known as Kaitangata. Description: A panoramic view of New Plymouth viewed from the sea, with Gannet and Albatross Islands on the right, the Wai Tera (Waitara) 'originally fixed on for the New Plymouth Settlement", the 'present site of New Plymouth' (before any houses were built) - all on the left side of the panorama. On the right are Mount Egmont, 'Barrett's [Accommodation] Houses and Hotel', 'Native Pah' and the Sugar Loaf Islands 'The islands on which Barrett defeated 5000 natives' In 'Information relating to New Plymouth (London, Smith Elder, 1841). p. 9-10, under 'Climate and soil' 'Mr G. Duppa states:- 'Amongst other sketches, I have sent you a panoramic view of the Sugar Loaves, Mount Egmont, and the Taranaki district generally, which I made when I went down there in the Brougham, with the Plymouth Company's surveyors. It will give you a better idea of the country than any verbal description I could give, beyond a few observations. The land for about three miles inland is slightly undulating, but not so steep but that a plough would go over the whole of it ... It is for the most part covered with fern and brushwood (which fire levels with the ground) for several miles inland, when you first meet with groves of timber, present a most park-like aspect ...' Description: Pirongia Mountain in the left background and the volcanic cone of Kakepuku to the right. A line of trees in the middle distance, flax and low scrub in the foreground, with part of the fenceline of Rarowera Pā on the right (also known as Raroera Pā). Rarowera Pa was on what is now Wallace Terrace, about a mile from the centre of modern Te Awamutu Other Titles - Pirongia Kakepuku There is a similar drawing by Merrett in the Grey Album, British Library, Add. Description: View north across the harbour from Thorndon, just to the left of Pipitea Pa, with the palisades of the pa on the right, a ravine and three Maori to the left of the ravine. Kaiwharawhara with the hotel is visible on the extreme left, with the Western hills leading to the Tararuas, and the Hutt Valley in the distance. The view may possibly be further along Thorndon Beach from the Pa. There was a ravine where the motorway now runs, crossed by the Hobson Street Bridge in later years, and this may be the area shown, in central Thorndon. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: An inlet in the Marlborough Sounds, with two wading birds, possibly shags, in the foreground, a small canoe with occupants by a rocky outcrop in the middle ground, bush and the palisades of a pa to the right. High hills in the background. In one of George Duppa's sketchbooks. Fox and Duppa were in a farming partnership while Fox was living in Nelson between 1843 and 1848. In addition, Fox is know to have spent March 1845 exploring the country north of the Wairau River. One of the watercolours by Fox in the Hocken Library is entitled Melville Cove. S. side of Cook's Straits. 1845. It is a view from a higher standpoint looking down on the bay, with Maori whare close to the shore among trees, and two Maori canoes on the water. At the top, a view looking west along Palliser Bayl, with Hokorewa Pa visible on the flat land near the coast in the distance, at the mouth of the Ruamahanga River. In the centre a view from the hills above Brooklyn and Ohiro Valley, looking west towards the harbour entrance. A few sheep are grazing in the foreground. Mount Victoria, Evans Bay and Lyall Bay can be seen. At the bottom, the house of William Swainson, with other buildings around it and trees on both sides. Three cows grazing in the foreground. Description: Shows views in the Wellington area. The top view looks along Petone beach to the south-east, with Petone Pa and the 'Native Chapel' (the large building on the left). The central view, taken from Tinakori Road's junction with Hawkestone Street, looks towards Kelburn. There is a bullock cart in the foreground, and three Maori carrying large bundles. The nearest house, on the lower slopes of Tinakore Hill, is that of Nathaniel Levin, with the house of Mr Holroyd above it, and Mr Dorset's house further in the distance at the foot of the trees that cover the hill. The lowest view at Ohiro Bay (or valley) shows a flock of sheep attended by a shepherd and a large-single storied house nestled against trees, the home of Judge Halswell.
