Description: "M" 90; an M class steam locomotive, type 0-6-0T. This image is a glass copy negative made by Albert Percy Godber from his own original print in an album. Godber's son William Albert Godber is standing on the far right. There is another inscription above this image which relates to another photograph in the Godber album. Inscriptions: Photographer's title on negative - centre right - W.A.G. Napier. 1922 "M" 90 was originally built as 0-6-0T type by Hunslet (maker's no 141/75), went into service in December 1875. It was modified to the 2-4-4T type in 1890 at the Addington Workshops, and was written off in October 1928. Description: Two photographs of Duntroon Railway Station with Campbell Street next to it; men working on the railway near Duntroon railway bridge; the railway bridge at Duntroon; the bridge over the Mangaroa River with some old track next to it; looking down the platform at Palmerston North Railway Station with goods trains in the yards, a passenger express train at the platform, the Railway Hotel on the right and in the distance the businesses of Barraud & Abraham and A Loufresne, builder; Middlemarch Station with the Railway Hotel and a Billiard and Sample Rooms on the right; Fairlie Station with a coal train on the left; and steam locomotives including the Rotorua express at Morrinsville station. Description: Photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1905 and 1907, covering a variety of topics. They include family photographs, both individual and group portraits, and Wellington houses (eg `Railway Whare', the house Godber and his family lived in, in Bay Street, Petone). One scene shows Godber's parents, Mary Ann and Charles Godber, with a large group of family members, including Albert Percy Godber, his wife Laura, and two children, Phyllis and William (p.21). On p. 13, Godber's wife Laura and two children are seen with an elderly couple, probably Laura's parents Charles Albert and Magdelina Clara Zinckgraf. Numbers of images show scenes associated with New Zealand Railways, including the Mataroa Railway Tunnel under construction, specific locomotives, signal stations, the railway station at Petone, and scenes at the Petone Railway Workshops. At the beginning of the album, several images show Godber and a team from the Petone Fire Brigade with medals they have won at fire-fighting practice competitions. A pocket at the front of the album holds two photographs, on of a new cutting on the road near Lowry Bay, and one of the `model of `D' class locomotive used in the Petone Peace Demonstration Procession' following the Boer War in 1902, signed `With A.P. Description: Railway trains, locomotives, and carriage interiors in New Zealand, Britain and North America. The Volcanic Plateau and Wairakei geothermal project. Most of the album shows ships on Auckland Harbour and at the wharves, including the launch 'Manu', used to provide "Captain Cook Cruises" circa 1980, and the refurbished waterfront and cast iron gates near the Ferry Terminal Building. There are also shots of people taking the sun in this area. The final section records some of the demolition and rebuilding in Auckland during the 1980s. Rationalist House also features. Description: Gordon Coates and his wife on tour. Most of these photographs relate to Coates' as MP and Minister of Public Works. Most of the events record the trials and tribulations of journeying to remote parts of New Zealand to open bridges, post offices, power plants etc. The album also records some of the social and recreational events associated with the tours. According to Gordon Coates' daughter, Mrs Sheila Pryde, this album belonged to Gordon Coates' wife Marjorie, who collected, and may have taken some of the snaps when she accompanied her husband travelling in various parts of New Zealand. Description: Photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1927 and 1955, mostly in the Wellington Region. Some are art photographs, including still life images of carvings, cloisonne ware and porcelain, and some are tinted. One sequence shows the Dominion Museum and Art Gallery, both interior and exterior views. Some were taken in April 1936 before the building was furnished; others were taken later in 1936 and 1937, including the Kauri Hall, the Sculpture Hall, the Art Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, the Academy Gallery, the Maori Hall, and the entrance vestibule. Civic events are shown in illuminations at the Government Buildings for the King George V Silver Jubilee on 12th May 1935; the Carillon tower floodlit for for the coronation of King George VI; and night photographs of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition in 1940, including the Australian and British pavilions. Wellington is shown in views from various hills and rooftops. Specific trips and occasions include a Waikaremoana trip in 1930; the Victoria University College Natural History Society trip to Butterfly Creek in 1933; a Camera Club outing near Mangaroa Hill in 1938; and celebrating Xmas in Auckland in 1952. Description: Album of photographs taken by unidentified photographers, taken in central North Island, and Otago and Southland regions, circa 1900s and 1910s. Some of the images are related to railways, including North Island scenes of the first passenger trip on 14th February 1909, during which the train stopped on the Raurimu Spiral because of a lack of engine power to haul it; the railway station at Longburn; a locomotive owned by the Wellington and Manawatu Railway Company; various engines including one image showing a J Class locomotive and an A Class locomotive with the caption "Note the difference in 20 years". South Island trains are shown in the Catlins District, including the construction of the Catlins River Railway, the Houipapa Quarry on the Catlins River Extension, loading wagons in the Balclutha ballast pit, the viaduct across the Catlins River at Houipapa, the Clutha Railway Bridge, and the Houipapa terminus on the Catlins River Railway. The North Island scenic views include the areas around Lake Rotorua, the Government Sanatorium at Rotorua, Sophia's Whare, a group of Maori boys diving for pennies, Whakarewarewa, Okere and Ohakune. Scenic views in the South Island are mostly around Dunedin (including Telford's country house in the Balclutha District), Clutha River, Balclutha, and the Catlins, including flax swamps and flax mills in the Catlins District.
