Camp life in the New Zealand bush; a scene on the route of the North Island Main Trunk ...

Description: Shows a tinted photograph of a small group of huts and tents amidst tall trees in a gully. The text beneath states: "Our picture shows a phase of the magnificent scenery which is to be met with along the route of the North island Main Trunk Railway, which links up the Cities of Auckland and Wellington, and is now practically completed. The numberless beautiful views and the impressive grandeur of many of the sights adjacent to the line should make one of the most popular routes for tourists in New Zealand, and the only thing to be regretted is that scenes such as that depicted above must vanish within a short space before the steady advance of the sturdy pioneer settler". Description of another copy at C-065-006, identifies one of the group shown, as Thomas Alexander Evans. Mount Tarawera, viaducts under construction, and the mountains of the Volcanic Plateau

Description: There are three main groups of images in this album. The first is about a climb up Mount Tarawera in September 1908. It includes views of the craters and the rift resulting from the eruption, and views over the surrounding countryside from the summit including lakes Tarawera and Rotomahana. The party also did some sailing in a launch on the lakes before moving on to the Waimangu thermal area and Wakarewarewa. The second group feature railway viaducts being constructed on the main trunk line in May 1908. Those depicted are the Makatote Viaduct, the Hapuawhenua Viaduct, and the Taonui Viaduct. There are two photographs of the road bridge over the Makatote River, and two photographs of the party picnicing in the bush by the river. The third group relates to climbing Mounts Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe over Easter 1909, and again over Easter 1910. There are views of Ngauruhoe erupting, the Mangaehuehu Glacier on Mount Ruapehu, the Crater Lake, the Ohinepango Spring, the party on both mountains, and a view Of Paretetaitonga Peak on Mount Ruapenu. Description: Photographs taken by Charles Tenison Salmon about 1906 to 1909. Images include views of the Ohakune/Horopito Road, a Christmas camp in the bush at Ohakune, the volcanic eruption of Mount Ngauruhoe in April 1909, and views taken when traversing the Tongariro National Park. Some photographs show Charles and Marie Salmon in the bush, and one shows three climbers, Charles T. Salmon, Edward Phillips Turner and Hugh Girdlestone. Views on the Ohakune-Horopito Road show a team of horses pulling an empty dray, and one of a group of people waiting while their carriage crosses a ford on the Mangatoetoenui River. Godber album 11

Description: Photographs, chiefly taken by Albert Percy Godber, including family portraits, areas where he lived, Petone and the Petone Fire Brigade, railways, the Hutt Valley, Wellington, and areas in the upper North Island. The family photographs show his immediate family (his wife Laura (nee Zinckgraf), and children William Albert and Phyllis Mary); groups including his father and mother Charles and Mary Ann Godber, his brother Harry Leonard and wife Annie and their daughter Constance Alice, and Laura's brother Charles Albert Zinckgraf. Godber was a fireman with the Petone Fire Brigade, and there are photographs of groups of firemen and fire fighting equipment, and displays of methods of fire fighting. Associated with Godber's work with New Zealand Railways, and particularly at the Petone Railway Workshops, there are views of various workshop buildings, groups of railway workers; one of M J Mack (General Secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants of New Zealand); images of damage to rolling stock after railway accidents; trains; the Raurimu Spiral; railway viaducts; logging railways; and railway stations. Photographs taken in the northern part of the North Island include coal mines, rock formations, hot springs at Te Aroha and Kamo; Whangarei and the Wairua Falls; suburbs of Auckland including Newmarket, Remuera, Parnell, Onehunga, and Ellerslie Race Course. Description: The Daylight Limited train crossing the Hapuawhenua Viaduct north of Ohakune, photographed Labour weekend 1949. Photographer unidentified. Library client supplied the date and identified the locomotive. Source of title - Title supplied by the library. This photograph and information about the date, was published on page 216 of `Steel Roads of New Zealand,' Gordon Troup (Ed), A H & A W Reed, 1973. The locomotive is also a KA 941 minus its ACFI feedwater heaters and the casing that covered the smokebox, and pannels along the boiler top and running boards. All of these were removed in 1948.
