Mundy, Godfrey Charles, 1804-1860 :Military post on Porirua Harbour [January 1848]

Date: 1848 - 1852 - 1857

By: Mundy, Godfrey Charles, 1804-1860

Reference: A-161-016

A small house lies to its right and the open sea is visible on the right, with hills behind the barracks on the left. The view looks south. Mundy describes the barracks in Our antipodes (1852) Vol 2 p.330 "With the usual fate of English barracks, those of Porirua are situated on the very dreariest - the only dreary spot in the circuit of the harbour - a sandy flat commanding its entrance. The present building is of stone, with turrets for guns ..." Paremata Barracks were situated at the entrance to Pauatahanui estuary, close to the modern bridge at that point. Artist unknown :Wanganui

Date: 10 Jan 1848

By: Smith, William Mein, 1799-1869

Reference: A-466-001

Description: Shows a fine detailed view of the town of Wanganui, from across the river. Shows settlers' houses, the Christ Church, and the Rutland and York (incorrectly noted as 'Fort') stockades on the hill mounds above the town. The Gun-boat stockade, on the site of Mouta Gardens, seems to have been demolished, although the fencing is still in place. A two-masted sailing ship is visible on the river, with a dinghy tied to it, along with a fully-manned waka and a smaller canoe. Two figures sit on the bank in the foreground, their backs to the viewer. A tall flagstaff stands on the hill behind the York stockade Attributed by the auction house to Captain William Mein Smith, but this is probably incorrect. By comparison, it could possibly have been drawn by Thomas Bernard Collinson, 1822-1902, who was employed to build the Rutland stockade. The Library holds other views of Wanganui by Collinson from around the same time (at A-292-001/080). Although the handwriting does not match, the drawing styles are very similar Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - Wanganui New Zealand / Jan 10 1848 / Fort Stockade / Rutland Stockade [in ink] Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Physical Description: Indian ink on paper, 185 x335 mm, on card backing 280 x 430 mm

Description: View from the south bank of the Whanganui River, with a Maori family beside a toitoi in the foreground and Shakespeare Cliff visible futher along the bank. Across the river is a clear view of the town, with Rutland stockade on the hilltop to the right, York Stockade on its hill to the left and Christ Church in the valley between the two, along with houses and streets. Christ Church appears to be on the wrong side of the adjacent road (possibly just a failure of perspective). The large central building at the water's edge is the Taylor & Watt store house and private wharf. The large building at the water's edge on the far left is the Commercial Hotel. The two jetties have a brig moored at them. Possibly the original for an illustration in a book (but not for Taylor's 'The past and present of New Zealand') Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - title.
