Source of descriptive information - History identified by Library client. Egmont Hotel was rebuilt to a design by Architect C. Description: Parade and crowd outside the nearly completed Egmont Hotel in Hawera. The hotel is a two storied wooden building with flags flying on the roof. Scaffolding can be seen on one side of the hotel. Photograph taken 1893 by Charles Whitmore Babbage. Date provided by researcher who has identified the occasion as being the parade for the opening of the Hawera Industrial Exhibition. See Papers Past Hawera & Normanby Star 25 May 1893 for description of parade, and Hawera & Normanby Star 29 May 1893 for mention of flags on the roof of the hotel. The Egmont Hotel and surrounding buildings on Princes Street, Hawera, were destroyed by fire in August 1895 (see Hawera & Normanby Star 30 August 1895). The hotel was rebuilt in 1896 to a design by Architect C. Brodrick (see Hawera & Normanby Star 30 January 1896). Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s). Physical Description: Glass negative
