Overlooking the house of Mr Watson, Devonport, Auckland

Description: Overlooking the house of Alexander Richardson Watson in Devonport, Auckland, circa 1900. Photographer unidentified. Source of descriptive information - Biographical information about A R Watson, and about the house in this photograph supplied by Doug Bolitho in August 2008. This house was built ca 1879 for Mr W L Rees, and bought by A R Watson in 1882. Watson did extensive work to the grounds, leveling, terracing and planting. Watson died in 1911 and his estate including this house was inherited by his son, Alexander Richardson Dickie Watson, who died in 1917, leaving no natural family. After the First world War the house was used as a convalescent home for wounded soldiers, and in 1934 was partly destroyed by fire. It was demolished in about 1936. (Information from Watson's great great nephew, Doug Bolitho, August 2008. Watson's obituary can be found in the New Zealand Herald for 30 October 1911.) Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s). Description: A view of Ahuriri, or the inner harbour in Napier. One small house can be seen in the middle distance. The view is possibly looking north-west, with a range of hills visible in the distance Attached to the back of the matt is a typescript that reads 'Australian artist. Lived there for some time. Did monochrome watercolours mostly around Sydney. He has work in the Turnball [sic] and in Hocken Libraries. Description: A view of Nelson Harbour from the hills above, and possibly from where William Fox was living. The Boulder Bank and Haulashore Island are visible, with snow-capped mountains in the distance. A two-masted ship and two waka can be seen in Nelson Haven, as well as two other vessels out in Tasman Bay. There are figures unloading barrels on the shore, and two houses in the foreground on the left Accompanied by a photocopied letter, originally adhered to the back of the painting, from Dawn Smith of the Nelson Provincial Library, dated 1982. Description: A scene with with a waterfront road, a breakwater and jetty. Between Mechanics Bay in the foreground and Commercial Bay in the background where several ships are anchored, is a distinctive high mound, the end of the Britomart promontory. On top of the headland at the left is a church (St Pauls) with a red wooden spire. To its right is the Albert Barracks. Below this is Emily Place. Ships' masts in the background are those moored at Queen's Wharf St Paul's Church was demolished in 1884, so the picture shows a scene before that date. The breakwater in Mechanics Bay dates from the 1870s. The mound shown is the end of Britomart Point with a road cut through on its left. This cutting was made around 1875, part of the reclamation of land and cutting a road through Britomart Point. The remaining mound was demolished over the next few years. Quantity: 1 oil(s).
