Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by John Williams; history of the Williams family of `Charlcombe', Lyalldale, South Canterbury; photographs of the farm and family; certificates of title and maps. Original owner of the farm was Arthur Cuthbert Williams who purchased 584 acres in 1901. In 2007 the property was owned by his great-grandson, J C L Williams. In 2006 the property was awarded the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award to mark over 100 years of continuous ownership by one family. See also addendum dated 2011-2014, MS-Papers-12040. Description: View looking down into Lyttelton Harbour from the Sumner Road area, taking in Lyttelton, with its few houses marked, as well as Rapaki and Cass Bays and looking towards Governor's Bay. The drawing forms a panoramic view with C-103-075-1, which includes Quail Island. Caption points out sites of other bays and early buildings in Lyttelton, including the (Canterbury Association) Agent's house (Godley's house), the house occupied by Torlesse, Cridland and Mantell, also 'Godley & Ballard's', 'Fraser and heads of departments', 'Men's hut and smithy'. Description: A single-storey house surrounded by a fence, with a shed or further house beyond it, a conical hill and other foothills of the Southern Alps in the near background. A figure with a pole over one shoulder walks along a path to the right towards the house. The house is surrounded by cultivated fields. Another building and possibly a haystack are to the right. Arowhenua is close to modern Temuka, South Canterbury, on the Opihi River. Tarahaoa is the Maori name for Mount Peel, possibly the conical hill behind the house. Mount Peel is some 40 km distant from Arowhenua and appears closer in this view than the location of modern Arowhenua would suggest. Description: A large thatched storehouse (pataka) on four poles to the left, outside a fenced area containing three houses (one with a European-style slab chimney), and a smaller taller storehouse in a tree on the far right. A group of Maori outside the fence appear to be selling potatoes to a European. No. S97 in Richard S. Schneiderman's catalogue raisonne. State vi/vii. Other Titles - New Zealand. Native store-houses and dwellings at Akaroa. Banks Peninsula [translation] Collector's mark on recto, a stamped monogram with AM in a circle. (The same mark appears on B-014-003). Description: A panoramic view of the plains north of Christchurch (with a small section missing). From left to right is a large stand of native bush (possibly Papanui Bush), 'Hills at Waipara' in the distance, 'Wood ... near Kaiapoi' also at some distance, sandhills, a Maori kainga with a rough palisade and two raupo whares titled Waiti... (word cropped), three further small stands of bush, the hills of Banks Peninsula, a further small stand of bush and the foothills of the Southern Alps. In the section showing the hills of Bank's Peninsula, a European man is standing, holding a flag or something similar on a tall pole. Despite the title assigned to this panorama, Waipara is in the distance and the view is more likely to be taken from south of the Waimakariri River Inscriptions: Recto - Features given their Maori names across the bottom of each page with some names in English also included Quantity: 4 drawing(s).
