Description: Shows a view of Lake Taupo with Maori houses and huts, and a raised storehouse on the foreshore in the foreground. Some houses are surrounded by fences of thin branches. Two pigs graze in the left foregorund, and the foreground vegetation includes two cabbage trees. In the distance, Mount Ngauruhoe smokes, and Ruapehu is snow-covered. This watercolour was painted by either William or and John Doubleday in 1885, while they were travelling around the world - on doctor's orders to cure lung infections. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Postcard shows a Maori settlement on the shores of Lake Taupo, with the outlet in the foreground being the source of the Waikato River. The mountains of the Central Plateau are in the distance. A plume of smoke issues from Ngauruhoe. There is a cabbage tree at the far right, and beyond it are whare and a pataka. Flax grows in the foreground, and there are tree ferns across the water at the left. Verso shows an engraving by W R Bock, of Mt Earnslaw, head of Lake Wakatipu, with a Maori prow carving overarching it. Scene on recto is similar to the chromolithograph by Thomas Ryan: "Lake Taupo and Waikato River, with Tongariro and Ruapehu" (1893), published in the NZ Graphic Christmas number 1893, page 11. Description: Shows a view of the head of the Waikato River, looking south across Lake Taupo to Mounts Tongaririo, Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu in the distance. On the right bank, in the foreground, is a Maori pa, with a pataka or food store shown most prominently. Both banks of the river are densely covered in trees, including pine and cabbage trees, and bush. A canoe or waka with six occupants glides away from the pa across the river.
