Description: Shows boys and girls and Mr Monkhouse doing `Public service', clearing flax clumps near swimming bath [at the Friend's School in Wanganui] Scope and contents information taken from note on lower left beneath image The Society of Friend's School in Wanganui was fostered by the enthusiasm of English Friend, John Holdsworth, who became recognised as the Founder of the School, which was opened in Feb. 1920 on 34 acres, with 20 pupils, staffed by Hugh and Annie Goldsbury for its first year. But financial difficulties forced its closure at the end of 1969 and it was later leased by the Education Department as special school for emotionally disturbed boys.
