Description: Show Taranaki scenes: Interior of George Curtis' house, Omata; Exterior of George Curtis' house, Omata; Alpha flourmill, Huatoki Valley and Victoria Road from Marsland Hill, New Plymouth; Henui (Weekstown) from the coastal dunes; Unidentified New Plymouth outskirts (possibly now Tukapa St / Westown). Attribution based on style. George Curtis arrived in New Plymouth in 1849 on the 'Pekin'. "As soon as a raupo house could be erected by the Maoris at Omata, George Curtis and his family went to live on his farm". (NZ Biogs, 1967, vol. 1, p. 53). Supplied titles. Description: Extensive view of a plain with volcanic cones in the background, including Mount Hobson and Mount Eden, showing a feast given by Waikato Chiefs in 1844, attended by about 4000 Maori and many Pakeha. A 400 yard-long shed is in the background and Governor Fitzroy is shown visiting the scene with many other Pakeha on 11 May 1844. Features and incidents are numbered and described below the work. A haka is being performed on the right for Fitzroy, Sheppard (the colonial Treasurer) and William Swainson (the Attorney General). Tribal groups are named as Ngatihaua, Ngatikoroki, Ngatimahuta, Ngatiwhatua, Ngatikoura and Ngatiruru and the plain is covered with large numbers of people, the majority Maori. A lithograph presented with Brett's Almanac for 1890, which is derived from an earlier lithograph published by Samuel Augustus Tegg in 1845, which in turn is after an original watercolour of the event made in 1844 by J. J. Merrett in the Hocken Library. This copy lacks a printed inscription on the recto of copy D-001-009 "Presented with Brett's Almanac for 1890" Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Kete hanging from the walls of the whare and food parcels hanging down from the ceiling, along with a large bundle of dried flax. A small fire burns outside the whare. The pa is almost certainly Taupo Pa at Plimmerton, visited by the artist in September 1844 and drawn on the other side of this sheet of paper. Original sketch for a lithograph reproduced in G. F. Description: Scrap book of miscellaneous photographs, many of which have no captions and have not been identified. At the front of the album is an undated newspaper cutting showing the original building used for the Colonial Museum in 1865, which `has been revealed by the pulling down of the Dominion Museum, at the back of Parliament House. For many years this building has been used for a variety of purposes, museum exhibits being housed in adjacent quarters, but it is about to be demolished'. The first group show interior scenes of the Canterbury Museum, with exhibits of bird skeletons, and mounted birds. Other scenes show mounted animals, possibly not in Canterbury. Scenery includes views of the Franz Josef Glacier; and a number which are identified showing the gold-mining area around Ross and Donoghues, the Totara River and Mikonui River. One page has six photographs of mountainous regions in Switzerland; several show the area near the Wellington caves in Queensland, Australia; and two views show the breaking of the Cook Strait Cable.
