Description: Album of publicity photographs, and photographs of posters and advertisements taken by unidentified photographers for New Zealand Railways. Many of the images in this album were taken for a series of articles written by Oliver Neal Gillespie between January 1939 and June 1940, published in the New Zealand Railways Magazine. The series was entitled "Buy New Zealand goods and build New Zealand. New Zealand Industries Series". These contribute the largest group of images in the album, covering a wide range of industries. They include men's and women's clothing manufacturers; electrical engineering companies such as Pallo Engineering (petrol pumps), National Engineering (Neeco electric ovens), Standard Engineering Company; tobacco factories; potteries; Nugget shoe polish factory; brushware factories; and companies associated with the manufacture of food products (eg Watties canneries, Edmonds Baking Powder, Griffins and Bycrofts biscuit makers, and Whittome & Stevenson sauce and pickle makers. There are other sequences of images, including newly built state housing in Lower Hutt, with some houses still under construction beside the Hutt River, a streetscape, and a children's playground (p 7-8); a large crowd joining in a send-off of R.S.A. men to Australia in April 1938; a train laden with boxes of oranges from Rarotonga, the "Special orange train from Auckland"; and photographs of charts showing the progress of the New Zealand Government Railways, with railways workshops staff organisation charts (for Otahuhu, Addington, Hutt & Hillside Workshops (p 28-29). On p 35 there are views of a new hangar at Rongotai Aerodrome, under construction, then views of the completed exterior and the interior with a row of Blackburn B-5 Baffin bi-planes. Several images show collection of Railway sports trophies (including cups for their cricket teams), and two views of New Zealand Railways staff member Neil Edwards, a tennis champion who represented New Zealand in Britain in 1939. Pages 39-41 show the construction of a large dredge on the West Coast; p 57 show a burst watermain on Waterloo Quary, wellington. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: View from the lower end of The Terrace, looking down into the Aro Valley and Te Aro Flat and across towards Mount Victoria, Oriental Bay and the Miramar Peninsula. Part of the Thorndon end of the city can be seen on the left. Courtenay Place runs away from the viewer in the centre of the scene, with Marjoribanks Street moving up Mount Victoria. The gasometers on both sides of Courtenay Place show clearly. On the far right is Wellington College Issued with descriptive text sheet. Description: A rough sketch with a view from Thorndon, looking towards Lambton Quay, and Te Aro, with Government House and its flagpole in the foreground, the waterfront (Lambton Quay) with several houses visible, Clay Point indicated and Mount Cook beyond it, with the Barracks. Bush with either tree ferns or cabbage trees is indicated in the near foreground. There are three ships in the harbour Attribution: attributed by the Library on cataloguing, 1980, to H J Warre. However the handwriting is not that of Warre, and the style appears less precise than his. This is one of four drawings in the same hand, with the same provenance, (A-172-013 to -016) one of which appears to be a preliminary drawing for a watercolour by Colonel C E Gold. Description: Shows three vignettes. In the first a disgruntled looking farmer is watching as armed forces personnel put up a barbed wire fence. The officer is telling him that the government is erecting barbed wire around the coastline. In the second a topdressing pilot is being told to drop bombs instead of fertiliser in the event of any hostilities. In the third an officer is standing on Mt Victoria in Wellington and telling his men that the old signal gun is to be turned around and pointed over Cook Strait.
