Description: "M" 90; an M class steam locomotive, type 0-6-0T. This image is a glass copy negative made by Albert Percy Godber from his own original print in an album. Godber's son William Albert Godber is standing on the far right. There is another inscription above this image which relates to another photograph in the Godber album. Inscriptions: Photographer's title on negative - centre right - W.A.G. Napier. 1922 "M" 90 was originally built as 0-6-0T type by Hunslet (maker's no 141/75), went into service in December 1875. It was modified to the 2-4-4T type in 1890 at the Addington Workshops, and was written off in October 1928. Description: Photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1905 and 1907, covering a variety of topics. They include family photographs, both individual and group portraits, and Wellington houses (eg `Railway Whare', the house Godber and his family lived in, in Bay Street, Petone). One scene shows Godber's parents, Mary Ann and Charles Godber, with a large group of family members, including Albert Percy Godber, his wife Laura, and two children, Phyllis and William (p.21). On p. 13, Godber's wife Laura and two children are seen with an elderly couple, probably Laura's parents Charles Albert and Magdelina Clara Zinckgraf. Numbers of images show scenes associated with New Zealand Railways, including the Mataroa Railway Tunnel under construction, specific locomotives, signal stations, the railway station at Petone, and scenes at the Petone Railway Workshops. At the beginning of the album, several images show Godber and a team from the Petone Fire Brigade with medals they have won at fire-fighting practice competitions. A pocket at the front of the album holds two photographs, on of a new cutting on the road near Lowry Bay, and one of the `model of `D' class locomotive used in the Petone Peace Demonstration Procession' following the Boer War in 1902, signed `With A.P. Description: Album of photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1901 and 1903. South Island subjects include the Cape Foulwind Lighthouse and quarry, Westport railway yards and wharf, Reefton, and scenes of explosions in Lyttelton Harbour for Regatta Day, 1st January 1909, and a large number of people beside the Spit Volunteer Fire Brigade building. Scenes show the laying of foundation stones for the Petone Waterworks, and for the Baptist Church in Petone, both in 1903. There is also a view of the lecturn for St Augustine's Church in Petone, which was made by the Petone Railway Workshops. Several photographs show the Kelburn Cable Car, the cable car tunnel and the engine room, in 1903. Two photographs of a group of school children, the girls wearing white pinafores over dark coloured dresses. Some photographs relate to New Zealand railways, including specific locomotives, the Rimutaka Incline with the middle rail (part of the Fell System), railway tunnels, bush railways and railway workshops and yards; and some relate to Godber's interest and work in fire fighting. Description: Album of photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1912 and 1914. Images include Godber's family, a few of identified people (names listed in the name file), and many with no identification. One image of a group of fitters and turners apprentices at the Petone Railway Workshops, taken in 1913, has all the apprentices named (listed in the full record for Godber negative, APG-0457-1/2) Views of the old Central Fire Station at Petone, and the new Petone Fire Brigade Station; the aftermath of a huge fire at Cooks' Cooperage (on January 14, 1914); and a locomotive which had rolled. Local Petone scenes include the Petone Council Chambers and town clock, and a number of houses in the area, including the home of Godber's friend Tom Mather; Korokoro bush, and the Korokoro Reservoir. Away from the Wellington area, Godber photographed a number of houses in Clonbern Road area; the Makatote Viaduct and the Manganui-o-te-Ao Viaduct. Description: Photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1915 and 1916. Many of the images show various aspects of logging in Piha and Karekare. Views include the Piha Tramway, bush railway inclines, scenes of lumbermen cutting down kauri trees and cross-cutting felled trees, transportation of logs by bullock teams and horse-drawn rail wagons, the Piha timber camp and mill and men at everyday activities in camp buildings and in their workmen's huts. Other sections of the album show views of Petone, and Godber's family (his wife, Laura Godber, and two children, Phyllis and William (Bill)); views of the central North Island; farming in the Mendip Hills (Canterbury); and views of Trentham. Description: Photographs, chiefly taken by Albert Percy Godber, including family portraits, areas where he lived, Petone and the Petone Fire Brigade, railways, the Hutt Valley, Wellington, and areas in the upper North Island. The family photographs show his immediate family (his wife Laura (nee Zinckgraf), and children William Albert and Phyllis Mary); groups including his father and mother Charles and Mary Ann Godber, his brother Harry Leonard and wife Annie and their daughter Constance Alice, and Laura's brother Charles Albert Zinckgraf. Godber was a fireman with the Petone Fire Brigade, and there are photographs of groups of firemen and fire fighting equipment, and displays of methods of fire fighting. Associated with Godber's work with New Zealand Railways, and particularly at the Petone Railway Workshops, there are views of various workshop buildings, groups of railway workers; one of M J Mack (General Secretary of the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants of New Zealand); images of damage to rolling stock after railway accidents; trains; the Raurimu Spiral; railway viaducts; logging railways; and railway stations. Photographs taken in the northern part of the North Island include coal mines, rock formations, hot springs at Te Aroha and Kamo; Whangarei and the Wairua Falls; suburbs of Auckland including Newmarket, Remuera, Parnell, Onehunga, and Ellerslie Race Course. Description: Album of photographs chiefly taken by Albert Percy Godber, relating to his family, his work and his interests. Family photographs include portraits of his wife (Laura) and two children (William and Phyllis), and scenes of their home in Whiteman's Valley Road, Silverstream; views of the Hutt Valley including large numbers of cars travelling to Trentham Racecourse, and the Hutt River. Another group of images relate to a holiday at the Mendip Hills Homestead in Canterbury, with scenes of farm life, including haymaking, merino sheep, and farm buildings. During their stay in the South Island Godber also took photographs of Dunedin (including the Ross Reservoir, Otago Boys' High School, Seacliff Mental Hospital, the 1926 Dunedin Exhibition, and the Hillside Railway Workshops); Invercargill (including the Invercargill Railway Workshops); Stewart Island, Moeraki, Tuatapere, Waiau River, Oamaru and Port Chalmers. Various railway stations in Canterbury and Otago, the Burnside Iron Mills, and the Rosslyn Mills. Godber was a volunteer fireman with the Petone Fire Brigade with the album including views of the building, groups of firemen, fire engines and other fire fighting equipment, and a building in Petone damaged by fire. In his work with New Zealand Railways, mainly at the Petone Railway Workshops, he took interior photographs of various buildings, including the Machine Shop and finishing benches, the engine room, lathes, boilers, and fitting shops. He also took photographs of many of the steam engines that were built and worked on at the workshops. One scene shows a group of men watching a fight. Many images show his interest in logging railways, particularly in the Piha, Karekare, Anawhata area. Scenes of logging camps, various methods of transporting logs including bullock teams, logging trains, and dams created and then tripped to send logs down by river, and timber mills. Other topics covered in Godber's photographs are scenes at Maori marae and meeting houses, with some of the people identified; Maori carving and rafter designs; beekeeping, and gold mining.
