Description: Album of photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1901 and 1903. South Island subjects include the Cape Foulwind Lighthouse and quarry, Westport railway yards and wharf, Reefton, and scenes of explosions in Lyttelton Harbour for Regatta Day, 1st January 1909, and a large number of people beside the Spit Volunteer Fire Brigade building. Scenes show the laying of foundation stones for the Petone Waterworks, and for the Baptist Church in Petone, both in 1903. There is also a view of the lecturn for St Augustine's Church in Petone, which was made by the Petone Railway Workshops. Several photographs show the Kelburn Cable Car, the cable car tunnel and the engine room, in 1903. Two photographs of a group of school children, the girls wearing white pinafores over dark coloured dresses. Some photographs relate to New Zealand railways, including specific locomotives, the Rimutaka Incline with the middle rail (part of the Fell System), railway tunnels, bush railways and railway workshops and yards; and some relate to Godber's interest and work in fire fighting. Description: The largest group of photographs relate to an Institution of Fire Engineers conference held at the Central Wellington Fire Station. Images of this event show fire engines and other support vehicles, and operational demonstrations of equipment such as hoses and ladders. Other photographs were taken during R A Cartwright's service as a fireman in Dunedin during World War 2. One group is of a house and garden at Blueskin Bay, Otago, and includes views of the Bay and surrounding landscape. There are two photographs of the Dunedin Central Fire Station, and two of the Ford motor factory at Lower Hutt. Other images are of trucks on a farm, Wellington, and a view of the war memorial arch at Christchurch. Arrangement: Negative at 1/4-108085-F to 1/4-108247-F. Includes images following a fire at the Gisborne Motor Service on 23 February 1927, and images of cars presumably from the motor service being used on roads in Gisborne city and the Gisborne region. Includes images of cars in various weather conditions, including snow, and also a horse-drawn carriage with wheels trapped in deep mud en route to Tolaga Bay from Gisborne, and cars on the road in deeply forested areas. Also includes an image entitled, 'Departure of hockey girls per Gisborne Motor Service', which shows a line-up of vehicles with men and women sitting on the cars or kneeling in front of them.
