William H Blythe's house, Wanganui

Date: 1894

From: Tesla Studios :Negatives of Wanganui and district taken by Alfred Martin, Frank Denton and Mark Lampe (Tesla Studios)

Reference: 1/1-021101-G

Description: William H Blythe's house in Wanganui, showing the entrance gate, photographed in 1894 by Frank J Denton. Note on back of file print reads "on neg: 5712 Blythe. Date: 1894 (accession register). From 1894 street dir: Blythe, William H. Wanganui." "William Henry Blythe and Alice Marr were married in 1876. In the 1880s William was a carter but in the 1894 electoral roll he is listed as a labourer. It is probable that this house started as a much smaller cottage that had additional rooms built as the family grew, and finances allowed. The double-hung sash windows are the "twelve-light" type (ie each sash has six small panes, three across and two down) which were typically used in the houses of the 1840s before larger sheets of glass were available in New Zealand." (Information taken from caption used in "Darling, I'm home!" display). Exhibited in 'Darling, I'm Home!' exhibition at the National Library of New Zealand, 1 June - 5 July 1999. Inscriptions: 5712 Blythe [on neg] Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s).
