Description: Photograph album of views of Wellington, ranging from copies of early paintings from the 1840s, and early photographs up to the 1870s, to a series of postcards from the 1920s. Most of the early images have clear descriptions, giving year made, location, and in some cases further information about buildings that can be seen. For example, one view shows Kebble's house, now the site of the Grand Opera House. Views in the postcards are identified, but no dates are given. Description: Photographs taken in the 1870s, covering a wide range of places, photographers mostly unidentified, and most images with no captions. The first group were taken in an around the Mediterranean, including Gibraltar, but particularly focussing on the Suez Canal. The sequence includes a copy of a montage produced by Hippolyte Arnoux, showing a map of the route of the canal, surrounded by photographs of canal designer Ferdinand de Lesseps and various sites along the route. Other images in this sequence were probably taken by Arnoux who was working in Egypt during this period. The next group of images travel via India (?), to Australia. Views of Melbourne include Government House, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Houses of Parliament, the Scots' Church (in Collins Street), the Post Office, the Town Hall, and the Public Library. Following these is a panorama of Sydney, and views of Tasmania. The New Zealand scenes start with a panorama of Auckland, the Mount Eden residence of G.B. (?, pencilled name undeciphered), and the Auckland Domain). Images further south include Ohinemutu; the Pink and White Terraces; Napier; the Manawatu Gorge; Wellington (with the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel visible in the foreground); Nelson; the wreck of the ship Otago, at Chasland's Mistake; and a number of views in the Dunedin area. The last sequence shows parts of Canada, including the Rockies, Montreal and the Niagara Falls. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Views of New Zealand, chiefly of Nelson, including the Maitai River, Nelson Reservoir, Nelson Harbour and Port, Nelson Christ Church Cathedral, and Waimea Road (showing Nelson College at the head of the valley). Other images of New Zealand include the Moeraki Boulders, Mitre Peak, the Criterion Hotel in Wellington, and a view of Gisborne. Images of Australia include views of Black Hill and Mount Gambier (South Australia), and Ballarat and Stawell in Victoria. A series of views of the Copenhagen area in Denmark include castles and palaces, the Kongelige Theatre, Fredensborg slot (Frederiksborg, Denmark), and a museum in Copenhagen. Photographs taken by Theodor Bloch who was a professional photographer in Nelson circa 1863-1888, and then in Victoria, Australia until circa 1891. Description: 21 cartes-de-visites taken circa 1858 to circa 1860s. Some taken by William Henry Davis and/or his father William Henry Whitmore Davis. Others taken by Batt & Richards. Other photographers are possibly also represented. 19 show scenes in Wellington. The other two are copies, one of a painting, one of an illuminated address (this one by H T Gourlay, Christchurch). Some images have inscriptions in pencil on the reverse. Images include streets, buildings, people, horse and carts, harbour and wharf with ships. An envelope and a letter dated 1958, from the Alexander Turnbull Library to Mr M Davis of Wellington regarding the copying of 21 photographs, are included. Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken by Daniel Mundy during the 1860s (some dated 1868), and about 1870. Captions hand-written by Mundy on verso of each page. (Information from comparison with handwriting and signature `D.L.M.' in Mundy Album III, p 51) Early photographs of Wellington show a view down Boulcott Street, a view probably from Boulcott Street looking down over `Rhodes Bay' (now the reclaimed area beyond Willis Street), and looking towards the city from Thorndon. One view in the North Island shows the Kinross residence in Napier. Most of the photographs are of central North Island, with particular emphasis on the volcanic areas around Lake Taupo, Lake Rotomahana, the Waikato River (including the Huka Falls and Aniwhaniwha Falls), Tokaanu, Ohinemutu and the Pink Terraces. Several scenes show military outposts and redoubts, including two of Captain Gilbert Mair "and his men" (the Arawa Flying Column), at Kaiteriria Pa, Rotokakahi "just arrived after a raid after Te Kooti"; and one of the interior of the pa "with Captain Mair's contingent". In the South Island scenes include Lyttelton, Akaroa Harbour, the Otira River and Gorge, Bealey River, the summit of Arthurs Pass, the Porters Pass Hotel, Taramakau River, Gibson's Quay at Hokitika, one of several small churches at Hokitika, and Hereford Street (Christchurch).
