Description: Six-panelled account of Captain Cook's arrival in New Zealand in 1769 and speculations about the identity of Nicholas Young, who first sighted Poverty Bay from the Endeavour and after whom Young Nick's Head is named These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News. In 1953, 48 of them were collected and published as a booklet called 'It happened in New Zealand' by Ross Gore. In fact, more was known of 'Young Nick' than the cartoonist realised. Description: Lantern slides of birds taken circa 1929-1950s. One photograph is a hand-coloured copy of an original taken by Frank Hurley and another a copy of an image by Herbert Ponting, but otherwise photographers are unidentified. Some slides have captions written on paper affixed to the glass, that describe the location and subject. Images show terns nesting, a black-billed gull nest in a stump, and a young black-billed gull on the Mercury Islands. A pied shag is photographed on a coastal rocky island [Marotiri?], the gannet colony on Horuhoru Rock (including nests) is shown in two slides, and gulls are shown on the water at an unidentified location. Set also includes a hand-coloured copy of a photograph by Frank Hurley shows a King Penguin on Heard Island, Antarctica, [ca 1929-1930?] and a copy of a Herbert Ponting image shows Tera Nova cook Thomas Clissold and surgeon Edward Atkinson pulling a seal-baited fish trap from a hole in the ice [ca 1911]. These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News. Description: Panoramic view of Milford Sound with survey ship H. M. S. Acheron on the far right and a group of Maori on the foreshore. Has previously been attributed to W. J. W. Hamilton and to John Lort Stokes. However comparison with the style of watercolours known to be by Evans held in the National Maritime Museum (Greenwich) and the Hydrographer of the Navy (Taunton) strongly suggest an attribution to Evans. At the time this image was reproduced a definite attribution to Evans had not been made and the picture was published as by an unknown artist. Admiral John Lort Stokes (then Captain) surveyed the New Zealand coasts in HMS Acheron during 1849-51. This original watercolour from which this reproduction has been taken dates from this voyage. Description: Vignettes reflecting current affairs. 'Woes of a cartoonist' shows David Low, his head in his hands, desperately trying to avoid a Wellington problem, where an MP is prosecuting a cartoonist for depicting him from his back view. In a related sketch alongside, Christchurch Mayor, Tommy Taylor, threatens to prosecute the cartoonists, having recognised his own hair in a drawing. A Finnish village is shown chained to the mainland, after a whole village was reported to have floated away in Finland. A ghost threatens a Christchurch City Councillor with a long white beard. The councillor does not known his own mind. A farmer races away after being confronted in Canada with 80,000 prospective brides, a recent reported event. 'The Jap Polar expedition' shows a group of Japanese men greeting the Japanese consul in Christchurch, after their unexpected arrival. Neither group can understand the other, and Japanese script spelling out whisky, cow and banzai is shown. 'The great gas box, via canal' shows a box containing a gas tank too large to travel via the Lyttelton tunnel being hauled by a traction engine. Description: Coastal profiles of Cape Foulwind (near Westport, West Coast, South Island) and its surrounding landscape in December 1642, during the visit of Abel Tasman. This was the first area of New Zealand seen by Tasman. Each profile has a lengthy inscription in Dutch below it. Dutch title is translated into English. Further translation of lower inscription reads: Thus appears the Staten Landt to south of the rocky point when you sail along the coast and views of rocky point which appear thus as you can see here below.
