Description: Album of photographs taken by John Tenison Salmon, including many contacts from 35 mm film, chiefly related to Wellington Camera Club outings. Others relating to photographic outings relate to the Photographic Society of New Zealand, Palmerston North regional meetings in October and November 1956. Many of the photographs show his interest in different lights and shapes, and he often gives details of lenses and filters used. Examples are winter light and shade at the Massey Memorial, a ploughed field near Palmerston North, the new entrance foyer and stairs when the Easterfield Science Block opened at Victoria University of Wellington in June 1959, still life images, flowers, cloud formations, ripples on sand, and light and shade along the Wellington Wharves. Description: Includes photographs of Maori artefacts in museum context. Possibly created by James Edge-Partington, an anthropologist who studied artefacts in New Zealand and the Pacific. This volume is in the same style of album, with similar photographs and articles as Webster album 4 (PA1-o-519) which has Edge-Partington's named bookplate inside the front cover. Studies of a variety of artefacts including an instrument giving a decoy call for kiwi; a sea leopard's tooth carved and worn as a pendant (from Stewart Island); whale teeth pendants; weapons; tools; carved waka, prows of waka; carved meeting houses; Te Kooti's house "Te Waho"; carved storehouses; a Maori kite; eel traps and fish hooks. The artefacts are from various collections in New Zealand and overseas, including the Chapman Collection, the Hamilton Collection, the Hocken Collection and General Robley's Collection. Description: Scrap book of miscellaneous photographs, many of which have no captions and have not been identified. At the front of the album is an undated newspaper cutting showing the original building used for the Colonial Museum in 1865, which `has been revealed by the pulling down of the Dominion Museum, at the back of Parliament House. For many years this building has been used for a variety of purposes, museum exhibits being housed in adjacent quarters, but it is about to be demolished'. The first group show interior scenes of the Canterbury Museum, with exhibits of bird skeletons, and mounted birds. Other scenes show mounted animals, possibly not in Canterbury. Scenery includes views of the Franz Josef Glacier; and a number which are identified showing the gold-mining area around Ross and Donoghues, the Totara River and Mikonui River. One page has six photographs of mountainous regions in Switzerland; several show the area near the Wellington caves in Queensland, Australia; and two views show the breaking of the Cook Strait Cable. Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken circa 1870s to 1880s, many by unidentified photographers, with several being taken by James Bragge. One that is clearly by Bragge shows his named carriage "J. Bragge. Photographer. Lambton Quay, Wellington" in a photograph taken on the road on the Featherston side of the Rimutaka Hill (on page 18). The first fourteen pages show views of the Pink and White Terraces, each from varying angles. These are followed by views of Ohinemutu. Many of the photographs are unidentified, including one of a meeting house with a group of Maori men, women and children in front. Painted on the maihi are the words "Mauimua Mauiroto Maui", painted fish and Maui in a boat fishing. On page 26 is a photograph of a painting, possibly by Charles Blomfield, showing Lake Rotomahana with the Pink Terraces on the right and the top of the White Terraces in the foreground, beside which there are two men.
