Description: Shows a view from the water of a small stretch of beach on which three canoes are drawn up. A group of Maori inhabitants stand on the shore, and further inland is a group of houses and a higher building which may be a storehouse, with a separate house surrounded by a verandah on a slight rise at the far left. Description: Shows a small settlement of a few houses, outbuildings and fences, seen from a rise just to the south, with the water of a curved coast at the far right. The road emerges from between low hills in the middle distance and curves south the follow the coast. The location is possibly around the Kakanui area. Attributed to a member of the Gifford family, possibly Algernon Charles Gifford. The location is possibly around the Kakanui area, because Oamaru itself was larger by 1900. Description: Shows three portraits of Maori, one based on a William Hodges image, one on an Augustus Earle portrait of a Maori herald and one profile portrait, said to be of Te Rauparaha but in fact after an Isaac Coates portrait of Rangihaeata. The view of Kororareka is after Augustus Earle. Illustrirte Zeitung was published 1843-1944. If this page is from volume 6, it may date from around 1848-1850. Other Titles - Illustrated Times. Description: Shows a section of the waterfront path at Kohukohu, Hokianga Harbour. A Maori mother and child walk along the path, and there is a wooden building on piles built over the water at the left. This building probably later became the Waterline Cafe, on reclaimed land at the water's edge. By early 21st century, had been sold into private hands. Description: View at Taupo Point, just south of Separation Point, Golden Bay, showing Taupo Pa with palisades and buildings and a bush-clad knoll beyond, the sea and several inshore islands. Depending upon the extent of Messenger's knowledge, the boat anchored off the beach is probably a Deal boat, and the mizzen was a "standing lug". The foresail was a "dipping lug" (see note below, and letter from Pat W Win, AT 13/14/1, 24 December 1999) A copy of John Wallis Barnicoat's eye-witness drawing "Taupo, Massacre Bay, March 1844", negative 11570 1/2. The original drawing is in a private collection but the Library has a photograph. Probably drawn for James Cowan's The New Zealand Wars, but not used. Two Deal boats and six Deal boat men were brought to New Zealand by the Nelson Preliminary Expedition which entered Nelson Haven in November 1841. One of the boat men was James Smith Cross who became Nelson's second harbourmaster. (See letter from Pat W Win, AT 13/14/1, 24 December 1999).
