Description: Album of publicity photographs including designs for advertisements for use in the new Zealand Railway Magazine; designs for posters for use in Railways Ticket Offices and one for a large neon lighting sign "Suggested `Claude Neon' Display for New Zealand Railway Publicity Department, Wellington. `Travel by train'". One photograph is entitled "`Post' corner 1880. Now site of King's Chambers". A number of images show a [Labour Day?] parade of marching people, and floats some of which are advertising NZ Railways holiday destinations, with slogans reading `Come to Rotorua', `Come to Waitomo', `Come to The Chateau Tongariro'. There are designs of title pages for the New Zealand Railways Magazine; a view of a commemorative key with a sheaf of corn on the handle in a presentation box; and designs for a programme of events surround the laying of the foundation stone for the new Government Railway Station, Wellington, N.Z. by HRH the Duke of Gloucester, December 17th 1934. These are followed by photographs taken during the Duke's tour of New Zealand, including crowd scenes in Wellington, Maori celebrations of welcome at Ngaruawahia, and scenes in the Rotorua thermal area. There are a few individual and group portraits of the management and administrative staff of New Zealand Railways, most unidentified. Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of New Zealand made by the Prince of Wales in 1920. Many of the images are of military inspections and displays by school children. There are also displays of Maori dancing and singing, the sailors of the HMS Renown, on which the prince had travelled , prior to their soccer match in Dunedin, the prince addressing the crowds etc. A number of the images are in two-part panoramas. Also included are four scenic photographs by the New Zealand Tourist Department which may have been taken in 1903. The photographer for the tour photographs was Guy. Description: Photographs of the Royal visit in 1927 of the Duke and Duchess of York, taken by an unidentified photographer. None of the photographs have captions. Description: Photographs of New Zealand, taken by various photographers. Some are unidentified, but many are taken by the Burton Brothers, J V (James Valentine), Tuttle & Co, for Simpson & Co., and Hart, Campbell & Co. In the North Island, a large number of photographs show the area around Mount Tarawera before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. There are a number showing the huge deposits of mud and ash which covered the area, with views of the landscape and of ruined buildings, followed by scenes of the Pink and White Terraces, before the eruption. On page 8, there is a view of Ranana (London), on the Wanganui River with the caption, "Maori village similar to those overwhelmed by the eruption". Other scenes in the North Island were taken in Auckland City, Ohinemutu, Rotokakahi, and Whakarewarewa, Ti Eke [i.e. Tieke] on the Wanganui River, and one of Wellington City taken from Mount Victoria. South Island views include many around the main lakes, including Wakatipu, Wanaka, Manapouri, Queenstown and Hawea; Milford Sound and Mitre Peak; the Otira Gorge; Kawarau Gorge and Bridge; Oamaru; Port Chalmers; and Dunedin. Views of gold mining areas in Otago include excavation sluiced out by hydrants at St Bathans, and the miners' towns of Naseby with the river choked with tailings, and Nokomai. Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken circa 1870s to 1880s, many by unidentified photographers, with several being taken by James Bragge. One that is clearly by Bragge shows his named carriage "J. Bragge. Photographer. Lambton Quay, Wellington" in a photograph taken on the road on the Featherston side of the Rimutaka Hill (on page 18). The first fourteen pages show views of the Pink and White Terraces, each from varying angles. These are followed by views of Ohinemutu. Many of the photographs are unidentified, including one of a meeting house with a group of Maori men, women and children in front. Painted on the maihi are the words "Mauimua Mauiroto Maui", painted fish and Maui in a boat fishing. On page 26 is a photograph of a painting, possibly by Charles Blomfield, showing Lake Rotomahana with the Pink Terraces on the right and the top of the White Terraces in the foreground, beside which there are two men. Description: Albumen prints of Fijian people, a photograph of Dunedin taken by J R Morris, and newspaper cuttings about the SS Mataura were inserted in the front pocket of the album. (The albumen prints have now been placed in protective sleeves and are housed in an envelope outside the album) Album of photographs, albumen prints of popular art works, maps, hand-written and illuminated programmes, and one hand-written poem, created by William Fox Wheeler between 1864 and 1869, during which he was purser on board the SS Mataura. Most of the art-works and hand-written and illustrated items were done by William Fox Wheeler himself. Items of unusual interest are listed below. A map "shewing mail services performed by the Panama, New Zealand & Australian Royal Mail Company, and lines connecting with the company's vessels at Panama" (between p. 46-47). Interspersed with albumen prints of popular art works such as "The Angel Gabriel", "Mother & child", "The Last farewell of Marie Antoinette", and "Fascination" are scenes of places visited by the SS Mataura in the 1860s. Numbers of images show scenes in New Zealand, many of which are unidentified. Several are small portraits of Maori men and women. The album contains a page with early New Zealand, German, Australian and United States postage stamps. A photograph of a painting by Gustavus Von Tempsky showing "`Waiari' scene of conflict with the rebel Maoris on the 11th February 1864" is on page 27.
