Description: Album of scenic views of Tasmania, Sydney and wider New South Wales, and of New Zealand, both North and South Islands. Views of lighthouses include Derwent Lighthouse (Tasmania), Macquarie Lighthouse (South Head, Sydney), and Farewell Spit Lighthouse (Tasman Region, New Zealand). The New Zealand photographs are nearly all taken by Josiah Martin, and include one that is a collage of scenes he photographed, and one of Maori weapons, with captions to say they were deposited [in Auckland Museum] by Captain Gilbert Mair. Description: Album of photographs of New Zealand (pages 1-10), Australia, Egypt, Europe and Canada taken by unidentified photographers circa 1880s. The New Zealand scenes are mostly in the South Island, including the Bealey, Cheviot Hills Station, the flying fox across the Teremakau [i.e. Taramakau] River, the Canterbury Plains, Governor's Bay and Timaru. One view shows two men in a logging camp; two views of the North Island show Muemutu [i.e. Ohinemutu], and Russell's Gold Battery at Taruru Creek. Australian scenes include a group of New Caledonian Kanaka with their "humpies" (thatched dwellings) at Bundaberg in Queensland; and one of the Wombat Ranges "the haunt of the Kelly gang". Several photographs of Egypt include views of Port Said, the Suez Canal, camels, Egyptians, and early ruins. Canadian images include Port Levis taken from across the St Lawrence River, and views of the Niagara and Montmorency Falls both in summer and in winter. Description: Mounted images with annotations from the first part of Albert Armitage Salmon's 1936-1937 trip to New Zealand. Images of South Island scenery and tramping, particularly along the Milford Track, comprise the bulk of the photographs, but prints also include some images of Salmon's departure from Sydney. Photographs taken by Salmon. - The images follow the route of Salmon and his companions' travels, and begin in Sydney Habour (Port Jackson) with images of the Habour Bridge, Luna Park illuminated at night, and the ship, 'Strathnaver', in the water. Also contains a photograph of Salmon's travel companions, Mary Hansen, Eric Keehn, Irene Booth, and Reg Booth aboard the deck of the 'S.S. Awatea' on their journey across the Tasman Sea. - The New Zealand images of the North Island begin in Auckland, and show a view of the Harbour and the University grounds with tulips in bloom. The images also include a view from inside a road tunnel in the King Country, rock formations above the Awakino River, the coastline and rock formations at New Plymouth, views of Mount Egmont (Taranaki), and tramping scenes in the fairy forest of Mount Egmont. The photographs also include views of Wanganui and the Wanganui River, the Wellington Harbour towards Miramar peninsula from the summit of Mount Victoria, and the hoisting of their car 'Marie', a Ford V8, onto the deck of the 'Rangitira' for the ferry ride from Wellington to Port Lyttelton, Christchurch. - The South Island photographs begin in Christchurch and include images of the War Memorial Bridge over the Avon River, and Hagley Park. The bulk of the images show scenery in Fiordland, including views of Lake Te Anau, the Eglinton Valley, the Hollyford River, Milford Sound, the swinging bridge and other scenes along the Milford Track, including images of snow, ice, waterfalls, glaciers, rivers, plant life, and mountain peaks. The box also contains a photograph of Mary Hansen wearing ankle boots with small heels as she crosses the Roaring Meg stream from Jervois Glacier. Description: Photographs taken in the 1870s, covering a wide range of places, photographers mostly unidentified, and most images with no captions. The first group were taken in an around the Mediterranean, including Gibraltar, but particularly focussing on the Suez Canal. The sequence includes a copy of a montage produced by Hippolyte Arnoux, showing a map of the route of the canal, surrounded by photographs of canal designer Ferdinand de Lesseps and various sites along the route. Other images in this sequence were probably taken by Arnoux who was working in Egypt during this period. The next group of images travel via India (?), to Australia. Views of Melbourne include Government House, the Royal Botanic Gardens, Houses of Parliament, the Scots' Church (in Collins Street), the Post Office, the Town Hall, and the Public Library. Following these is a panorama of Sydney, and views of Tasmania. The New Zealand scenes start with a panorama of Auckland, the Mount Eden residence of G.B. (?, pencilled name undeciphered), and the Auckland Domain). Images further south include Ohinemutu; the Pink and White Terraces; Napier; the Manawatu Gorge; Wellington (with the Duke of Edinburgh Hotel visible in the foreground); Nelson; the wreck of the ship Otago, at Chasland's Mistake; and a number of views in the Dunedin area. Description: Album opens with two images of Denniston buildings all of which are houses except for a church. There are some views of the surrounding countryside as seen from the plateau and a view of the roperoad railway with trucks crossing the plateau in winter. Two waterfalls are probably scenic features photographed from the horse track connecting Denniston with the coastal plain. Other images relate to Christchurch. These include boating on the River Avon, and groups of people photographed standing on two different bridges, one of them in the Botanic Garden. From Wellington there is an image of the Skyline tea kiosk at the top of the Kelburn cable car. Four images record people on a beach backed by vertical sandstone cliffs beyond which can be seen what looks like gum trees. Description: Album of photographs collected by Rev G E Mason on a trip around the world in 1885-1886. Comprises photographs of California, Tasmania, Sydney, Ceylon, Egypt and New Zealand. In 1884 the Bishop of Lichfield recieved a request from the bishops of Christchurch and Auckland, New Zealand, to send clergy to conduct missions in their dioceses. To this end he invited Rev G E Mason, and Rev Charles Bodington to do the job. The two clegymen left Liverpool for the United States on the 4th of July 1885, spent a summer in New Zealand, and returned to England in September 1886. Description: According to the inscription inside the front cover (by an unidentified person), the date is firmly established as 1884, however the album has a number of photographs of the Tarawera area, both before and after the volcanic eruption in 1886. These include views of the White Terraces, one of which has a group of Maori cooking food in the hot pools; a carved house at Te Wairoa, showing interior and exterior before the eruption, and the exterior afterwards; a group of Maori at Te Ariki (one of the places most devastated in the eruption with the loss of many lives. This image has the inscription `Natives of te Ariki first to be killed by eruption'); views of Mount Tarawera covered in mud and ash; and the Old Mill, destroyed in the eruption. Many of the images have the signature initials J.M. (Josiah Martin), and a few have the initials F.A.C (Frank Arnold Coxhead) who may have taken them, but which may just have been printed by him. The last few views are in Tasmania, including Burnie - Emu Bay, and the Guide Falls, near Burnie. Inscriptions: Album page - `Ex libris Brent Gration-Maxfield. 1967'; Album page - `New Zealand. 1884.
