Description: Extensive view of a plain with volcanic cones in the background, including Mount Hobson and Mount Eden, showing a feast given by Waikato Chiefs in 1844, attended by about 4000 Maori and many Pakeha. A 400 yard-long shed is in the background and Governor Fitzroy is shown visiting the scene with many other Pakeha on 11 May 1844. Features and incidents are numbered and described below the work. A haka is being performed on the right for Fitzroy, Sheppard (the colonial Treasurer) and William Swainson (the Attorney General). Tribal groups are named as Ngatihaua, Ngatikoroki, Ngatimahuta, Ngatiwhatua, Ngatikoura and Ngatiruru and the plain is covered with large numbers of people, the majority Maori. A lithograph presented with Brett's Almanac for 1890, which is derived from an earlier lithograph published by Samuel Augustus Tegg in 1845, which in turn is after an original watercolour of the event made in 1844 by J. Description: Shows two nests on the branch of a tree: the Auckland Hospital Board nest and the Whare Paia nest. A caricature of Titewhai Harawira depicted as a bird is shown in the Whare Paia nest, and an unknown man from the Auckland Hospital Board is represented in the nest on the left. A bird representing Ken Mason flies overhead, and has defecated into the faces of the inhabitants of both nests. A kiwi at lower right comments: "One in the eye for arrogance!" Extended Title - New Zealand truth The Mason Report concerned \"procedures used in certain psychiatric hospitals in relation to admission, discharge or release on leave of certain classes of patients\". The report was critical of Whare Paia, scheme was a service for Maori mental health patients, wherein it was hoped to bring together Maori and pakeha treatments and methods. The report criticised the scheme for lack of direction, purpose and structure. The title\" One flew over the cuckoo's nest\" is a reference to the American motion picture of the same name (1975, from a 1962 novel by Ken Kesey) set in a mental institution. Description: Scenic photographs of New Zealand taken by R.H. Bartlett, photographer who was working in Auckland circa 1875 to 1880. At the beginning of the album there is a fold-out page, opening into four full-sized photographs. Most of the images are of North Island scenes, including some of Maori groups outside whare, meeting houses, and a school with thatched walls and roof, and a view of the Maori pa at Ohinemutu. Most of the other views are landscapes, including the Pink and White Terraces, the Whangarei and Waitakere waterfalls; and hot springs at Lake Rotomahana, the Champagne Fountain at Wairakei, and the Crows Nest geyser at Taupo. Description: Colourful poster has a perpetual calendar in the centre, and is surrounded by advertisements for local businesses of Pukekohe, Papatoetoe, Manurewa, Otahuhu and Papakura. Above the calendar panel is a circular head and shoulders portrait of a clean-shaven Maori chief with facial moko; he is flanked by illustrations of the Scottish thistle and the English rose. Immediately above the calendar is a line of three-leafed clovers, and other illustrations included a boy and girl scout, and two illustrations of a taiaha and long-handled tewhatewha together.
