Description: Photograph album of New Zealand and Pacific Island scenes. Most were taken by George Dobson Valentine, in the North Island of New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, and Tahiti; a few were taken by the Burton Brothers in the South Island. Within the New Zealand scenes there are a large number of views inside and out of the Waitomo Caves; and another group show the area around Lake Rotomahana with the Pink and White Terraces before and after the 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera. Description: Photograph albums entitled 'Views of New Zealand', containing Burton Bros photographs of New Zealand scenes, as well as views in Tonga and Samoa. These island views include one of Princess Anaziene (grand-daughter of King Tupou I of Tonga) outside the palace at Nukualofa; another taken near Nuku'alofa, Tongatapu; one of Neiafu (Vava'u, Tonga); and one in Apia, Samoa. Places in in the North Island of New Zealand include the Pink and White Terraces before the Tarawera Eruption of 1886; Mangarewa Gorge (named as Mongarewa Gorge in the album); Rotokanapanapa, Lake Rotomahana; and Waiwera with the Waiwera Hotel centre left. The South Island images show Lake Moke; Wet Jacket Arm; Passage Point Cove in Dusky Sound; and Cabbage Tree Grove (Halfway Bay, Lake Wakatipu) in which a log hut with thatched roof is seen behind a large flax bush, surrounded by cabbage trees. Description: Photographs all stamped Registrar of Copyrights with a serial number which has been put in brackets after the following descriptions: the Volunteer Camp on the banks of the Waiwhakaiho River showing many rows of bell tents, lines of carts and men gathered for an address - taken by D M Warren (551); Paetae, a Maori man with moko and holding a rifle with a whare behind him (700); a group of four young Samoan women sitting in a clearing in front of a house (661); a four Fijian women, one holding a young child (655); and a group of ten Tongan girls in front of a hut (675). Description: Photographs of Hawai'i, Samoa and New Zealand, taken by various photographers circa 1880s and 1890s, including John Richard Morris, John Davis, F Finch and Josiah Martin. Inserted in an envelope is a hand-written list of photos, but these seem to bear no relationship to the album. The list includes places in New Zealand (none of which are in this album), Sydney, New South Wales, Brisbane, New Caledonia and Fiji (again none of which are shown in this album). The photographs of Hawai'i include Iolani Palace in Honolulu, and Queen Lili'uokalani; Samoan images show children, a waterfall at Falefa near Apia, and a group of dancers in traditional dress. Images of New Zealand include landscapes, Maori children, a hongi with two women, and a collage taken by Josiah Martin of images of Maori chiefs, waka and meeting houses at Parihaka and Ohinemutu.
