Description: Fiji and its people, its traditional buildings, crafts, and industries; the milk trade and a milk bottling plant; forestry and crops; scenic views and places; public health and tourism. As well as photographs taken in the 1970s, there is also a small group stamped "Fiji official photograph, Public Relations Office, Suva" dating from the 1950s. The Ngata Memorial College photographs date from 1977. They show the buildings, students and student activities, including a dance performance by visiting Cook Islanders. There are also five photographs and one negative of an international seminar on the relavance of Ghandi to our times, held in New Delhi in February, 1971. At some time between 1984 and 2000 all the prints relating to Tonga were returned to Ernest Crane. Wendy Crane returned these when she donated negatives in February 2000. Description: A mix of family photographs and others taken as documents of various aspects of the countries visited. This is particularly the case with the photographs of Tonga and Fiji. The largest group of negatives relate to Tonga. They record the kingdom's geography, something of its geology, village and town life, factories and industries as well as traditional crafts. Crop plants, forestry, and dairying; buildings, the parliament, the Royal family and ceremonies associated with them, are also recorded. There are visits to other islands in the Tongan group, including a school visit to Vava'u, and a group of negatives relating to the staff and students ot Tupou High School. Other negatives date from the time that Ernest Crane taught at Ngata Memorial College, Ruatoria, in the early 1970s. Most of these record family events, holidays with friends, or visits to Gisborne. The only group relating directly to Ngata Memorial College are those of dancers from the Cook Islands who visited the school. There are a few negatives of Fiji, one lot dating from 1971 and recording friends in Suva just before departure. Another set is of a production of Shaw's play "Androcles and the Lion", performed by students of Dudley High School in Suva Town Hall, June 15th-17th, 1971. Family reunions, a holiday in Russel, Easter 1973, and other family events. These negatives relate directly and indirectly to prints deposited by Ernest Crane and held in PAColl-0086, and PAColl-6186. Arrangement: Negs at 35mm, 28046 to 35mm, 28326. Description: Largly New Zealand material and photographs of paintings of the war in the Pacific by Allan Barclay Barns-Graham (official war artist) and Oliver Arthur Gillespie. New Zealand material includes views of coastal defences, military training at various camps, prisoner of war camps, Home Guard, public military parades, sports, army personnel including portraits, guns, tanks and other weapons, repatriated soldiers, medical units, ministerial visits, the posthumous investiture of Lt Ngarimu with the V.C., and mechanical transport. Arrangement: This collection is made up of empty negative envelopes with captions some of which have file prints attached to them, and sheets of contact prints which are also captioned. All of the negative envelopes have the relevant negative numbers written written on them. They were scattered throughout the wax boxes in which the War History collection had been housed for the last eight years. In giving the collection a general order they have been sorted into their series groups. This collection contains material which has been called the "35mm" series. They have not been arranged in numerical sequence as yet (though some might be so arranged). Any negatives will be found in the 35mm registers at 16398 - 16509. (Feb 1995)
