Description: Sketches depicting incidents arising out of a taua or raiding party visiting Parawera settlement to exact revenge after a case of adultery. The marae, various groupings of iwi, dances, fights, haka, horseriding, and competitions are depicted, along with a visit from the police. The Parawera group were Ngati Apakura, Te Wherowhero's iwi, and the visitors in search of payment were Ngati Raukawa, Ngati Hourua and Ngati Koroki. Ngati Haua are also mentioned in one sketch. Helen Clark protects Turiana Turia from opposition accussations of political interference. President Bush attempts to calm and reassure the American people in the face of extreme threats from Osama bin Laden and his Al Qaeda network. John Howard wins another term as Australian Prime Minister on the backs of refugee boat people. Jim Anderton and Bill English look for ways to provide gaurded support for New Zealand SAS involvement in Afghanistan. Shows lions in a zoo with a sign 'Big Cat poisoning Times...' Description: Shows the warriors of Tikitapu fiercely fighting their enemy in retaliation over the loss of their chief's pet lizard. They are fighting in and on the banks of a spring which later became known as Te Pupunitanga (or The Ambush). It is said that the ground was covered with heaps of wounded men who twisted and writhed in agony so that they resembled whitebait fighting to escape as the net is drawn ashore. Description: John Townley arrived in Auckland from England 1863. He served in the war in Hawkes Bay, and was present at the battle of Omarunui. In 1877 was elected to the first Gisborne Borough Council of which he was a member until 1899. He was mayor from that year until 1907. During his mayoralty the Gisborne water supply was inaugurated - He was Chairman of the Harbour Board for 27 years, Superintendent of the Fire Brigade for 30 years and Chairman of the Gisborne permanent Building Society (Source: Scholefield pp.393). Another source (Back of PA3-0261) gives date of his Mayoralty as 1991- Inscriptions: Verso - J Townley. Arrived in Auckland 1863. Description: Shows a view looking down on the a small hill and plain, with a curved row of posts around the base of the small hill. Accompanying notes indicate that this is the site of the battle of Te Ranga. The battle of Te Ranga occurred on 21 June 1864. Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s). Physical Description: Photolithograph, 80 x 110 mm, on sheet 115 x 155 mm. Provenance: Dr P M Barclay of Middlesborough England donated this and two other works to Tauranga District Libraries in 1989; he had inherited the work from his grandfather who was surgeon to the 43rd Monmouth Light Infantry Regiment, although the surgeon himself did not serve in New Zealand.

Description: Cartoons on political and social issues. The government is shown as a highway robber giving an ultimatum to a motorist, 'petrol tax or your life'. A Hurricanes rugby player pulls himself up from the toilet bowl were they were flushed in an earlier season. Helen Clark and Phil Goff reserve the right to impose sanctions on Zimbabwe while remembering their early protesting days. A child suggests sharing the disputed Middle East territory to both the Israeli's and the Palestinians. They think it's a crazy idea. President George W Bush addresses the nations he lectured on free trade telling them that America can impose tariffs on steel imports if they like and it's too bad for everyone else. Comment on President Mugabe's interference in the voting process leading up to the Zimbabwe elections. Shows a member of the IRB (International Rugby Board) Vernon Pugh snatch the football (Rugby World Cup) from an All Black players hands. The player has landed flat on his back. America's war on terror appears to be becoming more frightening than the terror itself. Yaser Arafat and Sharon flex their muscles in a game of arm wrestling while chest deep in a blood bath. Vernon Pugh, Head of the International Rugby Board and Trevor Mallard, Minister of Sport size each other up. A boy tries to stop his father burning his Hurricanes rugby jersey, the rugby team is winning again. George W Bush outlines his approach to the use of nuclear weapons. Treasury suggest selling off thousands of war memorial sites around the country get a better return on the real estate investment. John O'Neill, Chief Executive of the Australian Union justifies Australia gaining the right to host all of the Rugby World Cup games. He admits they have got blood on the hands from stabbing the NZRFU in the back. Jim Anderton assumes The Thinker position as he contemplates the many political parties he's been through or started and left. Helen Clark in army fatigues gains shelter behind the huge boot of the American Forces. She rehearses what she'll say to President Bush if he brings up New Zealand's nuclear free stance when they next meet. Shows three Oscars all lined up with tags attached to them. They are being held in storage till 2003 for Lord of the Rings. David Lange, former New Zealand Prime Minister, tells New Zealanders that the United States wanted to liqudate him. Description: The British attack on Kapotai Pa, Waikare Inlet, Bay of Islands. Several armed redcoats by a clump of bushes in the foreground, other soldiers and "friendly" Maori firing from behind a line of bushes in the middle distance towards the fenced pa site set against hills. A European house outside the fencing on the right has other Maori around it. This attack took place in the Omapere area, a week after the attack on Puketutu Pa. Kapotai Pa was on one of the head creeks of the Waikare Inlet. Bridge organised a boat expedition to Kapotai Pa and burned the pa while the friendly Maori, under Tamati Waka Nene, fought the Kapotai in the bush. (Information from James Cowan's "The New Zealand Wars" (1922), p.45, where this image is reproduced.
