Description: A view from Tuamarina Hill, looking south towards the Wither Hills and White Bluffs, with the Wairau Plain below. Spring Creek winds towards the sea in the foreground, and a large stand of bush is marked in with solid pencil in the middle distance On the verso is T. B. Collinson's pencil drawing [Tropical port with banana plantations] (A-292-092). This drawing relates to a privately-owned watercolour 'Part of Wairau, July 1845'. The watercolour shows the far hills at a greater distance and includes a section of 'Massacre hill' with two European men in the foreground. The details of the Wairau Plain are very similar in both works. The date on the watercolour is earlier than the date on this view but Bell possibly made a copy for T. B. Collinson, in whose sketchbook this drawing appears. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - title and date and attribution in ink in the hand of T. B. Collinson. Description: Facsimile of a handwritten letter, dated 11 July 1843, "to the inhabitants of the settlement of Nelson in New Munster", expressing the sympathy of the mayor (George Hunter), aldermen, town councillors and some inhabitants of the borough of Wellington, for the loss of "those who fell in the attempt to uphold the equal authority of British laws among British subjects". It is signed with 136 signatures, including many Wellington politicians of the day. Four copies held. Quantity: 1 b&w photo-mechanical print(s) (4 copies). Description: View from the hills above Tuamarina, looking south, with dense bush in the foreground, grassy plains along the shore to the left, the passage of streams marked by trees, a stand of bush in the centre distance marking the site of Grovetown, with the site of Blenheim to its right, the Wither Hills in the far distance. Two men are standing in the foreground viewing the scene. One has a pack on his back, and a walking stick, and gestures with his left hand toward the vista.
