Description: Land clearance and development projects during the 1950s. Photographs show examples of techniques and machinery used for bringing in land such as rolling and crushing scrub and using cattle to crush and clear lupins. Much of the land developed for agriculture during this period was pumice land. There is a slide sequence designed to show methods for establishing pasture on this particular soil type, and a number of other slides showing the finished product -- productive farms in the Rotorua area. Landblocks named in this collection are, Newstead Block, "Rushden" Waipukurau, Lynwood F. S., and Okahukura Block. Description: Photograph album formerly belonging to Phyllis Johnston. Contains images taken during three holidays in New Zealand. Compiler of albums, and photographer(s), are unidentified. Album is extensively captioned though few people are identified. - Motoring trip of North Island in January 1931, following family on a camping trip in a A-Model Ford. Route, as suggested by image order in album, goes via Hastings, Wairoa, Lake Waikaremoana, Morere, Gisborne, Opotiki, Ohope, Whakatane, Rotorua, Whakarewarewa, Tauranga, Waihi, Thames, Mercury Bay, Tui Glen, Waiwera, Waipu, Whangarei, Bay of Islands, Mount Messenger and Dawson Falls. Images feature camp grounds and sites, car with tent awning erected and with gear packed alongside, picnicking scenes, motoring scenes, and tourist sights on route. Images and sites of note are: Tongoio Falls; Aniwaniwa Falls; road between Gisborne and Opotiki including ford, adjacent ranges and valleys, bush, and coastal views; Whakatane War Memorial; Road between Whakatane and Rotorua, including bush, Lake Rotoma, Hongi's Track, and Tikitere geothermal area; Whakarewarewa, including tourist group with Guide Rangi, Maori children bathing, and Frog Pond; Tauranga Harbour and railway bridge; gorge between Waihi and Thames; bullocks hauling Kauri logs south of Coromandel; 'Rotten Row' cabins at Waipu; Christ Church, bay and sea shore, and view of town from the flagstaff, Russell; cream being delivered by row boat in Bay of Islands; Zane Grey Camp, Otehei Bay; car on barge crossing between Russell and Paihia (including car transfer to shore); Williams Memorial Church, Paihia; and Waitangi Falls. Dunedin images include Knox College, Winter Gardens, child Maklin Duncan of Elgin Road, and Mrs Hosking, some of her children, and her father Mr White. Oamaru images show the cityscape, Basilica, and Oamaru Gardens (fountain, duck pond, swans). Also includes a copy of a studio portrait of Winnie M Munro and Mr and Mrs Munro on their balcony. - Anakiwa, Queen Charlotte Sound, and Blenheim summer holiday (1935-1936) pictures feature the natural sights of the Marlborough Sounds area as well as family holiday snaps of holiday activities such as social events, picnics, fishing, bush walks, and day trips. Description: One photograph album compiled by Margaret Petyt containing black and white photographic prints of friends and family and scenic landscapes recording the trip that she made around New Zealand in 1948. Album two is compiled of holiday snapshots that Margaret took while on a trip to New Zealand via Sydney. Images in Australia include Margaret departing from Tasmania and city scenes in Sydney including the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The New Zealand component of Margaret's trip started in Auckland and went down to Dunedin. Margaret visited tourist destinations including Lake Pukaiki, Mount Cook, the Tasman Glacier, Ball Hutt, Maruia, Lewis Pass, Nelson, Picton, the Queen Charlotte Sound, Half Moon Bay, Golden Bay, Oamaru, and Akaroa. The album includes her bus getting stuck on the way to Mount Cook and photographs of a train crash inscribed as being at "Otaki". Margaret visited friends and family in Hamilton, Wellington and Dunedin and there are photographs of various people including the Law family, the Pollard family, the Clist family, the Cumberland family and the Macpherson family.
